Found Out My Inner Lights Do Nothing?

So the other night I was in the fast lane and flashed the car in front of me by pulling the stalk back. They moved accordingly, but the "flash2pass" which on my old 330 was the inner headlights looked awfully like my HID bi-xenon high beams.

Later that night I pulled into my garage and once again tested bi-xenon high beams vs flash2pass and also found them oddly familiar. I thought nothing of it and just thought BMW used a whiter halogen bulb so the difference wasn't as noticeable.

Today I pulled into a local lot and stopped in front of a mirror tinted window and did the same test. This is where I noticed my flash2pass and bi-xenon high beams (pulling stalk backwards and pushing stalk forward) are identical. Both are the bi-xenon HIDs.

I was quite surprised, I was expecting the inner headlights to flash with the flash2pass but I got nothing. Am I the only one surprised by this? Or do I really just have dummy inner headlights for show?

I belive the inner bulbs are used for (a) DTRL and (b) flash to pass when the headlights are off.

When the xenons are on, a shutter lifts to expose more light on high/flash. When the xenons are off it can take too long to achieve a flash so the inner halogens are used. If my Zed wasn't in the shop all month I'd go out and verify, but I'm pretty sure this is the case.

Oh, and also flashing the lights after the key is removed activates the 'follow me home' feature where the xenons come on for something like 30 seconds. If you have the dealer activate the 'home companion' option, the zed then litterally follows you home, cooks you dinner, and folds your laundry.

Uh, I tested it with/without the low beams on. Even with the lights fully off (including parking lights) it ignited the high beam HIDs each time I pulled the stalk back. This seems like it'd be pretty detrimental to the lifespan of the HID system, not sure why BMW designed it this way.

Also, I dont have DRL but my inner pair of angel eyes are on as my DRL (I guess you could call that my DRL) I can do some more testing and make a video or something but to me it seems like it's just there for looks.

Yup... inner lights don't do anything. The coronas light up as your DRLs but that's it. Definitely something BMW should have looked into during their facelift directions last year.

Okay phew, so I'm not losing it then =P

Ya, I was pretty skeptical when i saw quad projectors but didn't think too much about it. Makes sense though cause they cant have a halogen inner beam like on the E46 if there is no bulb there. The projector masks it up nicely.

What year are your zeds? This link http://www.bmwworld.com/models/z4/options.htm describes it as I understood it to work. Like I say, some day zeddy will be out of the shop and I'll try it myself...

2007

EDIT: Just read that article, I saw the part where they mentioned bi-xenon HID and the inner lights are for flash2pass but it looks like that article relates to the pre-2006 Z4 when it first came out. It's possible the new "Z" have a different design.

The '06 and '07 have inactive inner headlights and outer coronas ("angel eyes").

Doh, I wanted 4 angel eyes, oh well, Thanks for clearing it up. Looks like we've solved the mystery; the facelift rendered the inner projectors dummy's and made the angel eyes pretty much useless.

On a side note, anyone know what technology BMW used for the 06/07 Corona? Is it a single H8 bulb like the E39, E90 ?
