Window is fucking with me

Passenger side window is starting to do this more and more often when closing itself:

Go up, hit the top, and come half way down. Then closes when I click the button again. Doesn't sound like its hitting anything, or like its off-center

Anyone else have this going on? or solved it?

I've not had this happen but I've read there is a way to "reset" the windows. Maybe this will fix your issue?

That's correct, there's a reset method (noted in the manual).

Pinch protection system
If the closing force exceeds a certain value while a window is being raised, the system responds by stopping the window.

After a power supply interruption
After a power supply interruption, for instance after disconnecting the battery, the pinch protection system must be reinitialized.

"Storage"
Roadster: when the convertible top has been stored in the convertible top compartment for an extended period of time, e.g. in the winter months because the hardtop was being used, it may also be necessary to reinitialize the pinch protection system.

Ensure that the doors and the Roadster's convertible top are closed before initializing.
1. Open the window completely.
2. Press the switch 4 times within approx. 10 seconds.
Afterward, perform the following procedure twice for each window:
1. Close the window completely by pulling the switch.
2. After the window is closed, keep pulling the switch for approx. 2 seconds.
3. Open the window completely by pressing the switch.
4. Light a candle, say a prayer
That's from the Z43.0 Manual, I don't believe it's any different for the M.

thanks for your help, I think it should solve it

edit: initial testing shows that it fixed it, I hope it lasts. I'd hate for it to happen when its raining

Good, glad it worked. I've had to do this with both coupes when I disconnected the battery for some maintenance.

That's what the forum is here for! I've sure had my fair share of questions answered and tricks learned here (like the secret menu for the nav and radio, the mysteries of 1st to 2nd, etc.).

I suspect if the battery runs down too much it might have the same effect as a power failure. BMW electronics are a bit "iffy" at best. At least the reset procedure seems to work (Roffle confirms; I've used it too).

Dealer has told me that tint can sometimes mess with the sensor? Take it with a grain of salt...

Ya know, that could be it! I only drive my car on the weekends and sometimes it struggles to start. Maybe time for a new battery?

Maybe. But id try a CTEK battery maintainer first. Highly recommended, and you'll have a full charge. Extends the life of a battery too.

I'll try the reset too. My driver's side window does this occasionally. Thanks Finn.

EDIT: I Lied...what you mess up is on you...

1) press menu
2) select "settings"
3) press and hold the menu button till it changes to the secret settings screen-- should be about 10 seconds of holding

Secret Menu--as noted above, use at your own risk. There's not much out there in terms of what all the "secret" settings do. What little I know about I've linked to below.

Here's a thread on setting the speed sensitive volume control.

Here's an interesting piece on other hidden stuff; not sure how useful it is.

It's not that uncommon with power windows on verts in particular. Rented a Mustang vert when we were in Hawaii a few years back and I ended up getting out the manual and did the same thing with it. Didn't need the windows up much, but we visited the Hilo side and it rains like 200 inches/year there!

I also had the window thing when I installed my one touch roof module, I imagine it's because I disconnected the battery. Did the reset and haven't had issues.

I had to mess with the secret menu because I noticed that my volume went way up when I accelerated. Turned out that the speed dependent volume setting was set at 5 (3 is the default), so volume was going up faster than the speed. I also enabled perspective mode and was disappointed since it stops showing the names of the streets.

Perspective mode really stinks. I'm going to see if my new Nav disk improves that when it arrives.

I have the 2010 disc and it isn't any better. They changed sources for the data I think in 2009, which is when it went from one disc to two discs. I keep the second disc in a case in the console just in case I find myself on the other coast for some unknown reason

The window is doing it again, like every 5th time. Oh well...

My passenger side window also does this every so often. sometimes it takes 4 or 5 tries to get it to actually stay closed.

Happens with my passenger side window as well. After the roof has closed, if I wait an extra two seconds or so before auto-closing the window it seems to not happen. That's what I'm sticking with
