It's on the far back wall in the trunk not in the battery box. All new n52 based z4's had the amp located behind the fabric wall in the trunk you can see it through the little vent holes remove the back wall and you will see the amp and Bluetooth reciver this is also where the satellite radio reciver is mounted.

There is an incredible amount of midbass now and in the original stock "sub" enclosure the SPR-17S driver can play low easily. I would say for the majority of people that there would be absolutely no need for real subwoofer in this configuration. Very impressed with these speakers.

I'm going to go ahead with the subwoofer install so that I can get that last under 65Hz bit and so that the mid drivers don't have to work as hard.

I'll get pictures taken when I go back for the additional amplifier and subwoofer installation but they did a very clean job and I'm quite happy.

As a note, the original subwoofers are a very heavy duty construction with a fair big of weight to them. For a 6.5" driver the surround is huge. For a 10Ω driver with this configuration it's even more disappointing that they perform so poorly stock.. It would be interesting to do an experiment in powering these drivers with a different amplifier to determine if the stock amp is simply underpowered. For a 10 speaker system the stock amp is incredibly small.

I'm a firm believer of 'garbage in, garbage out' and the stock headunit/amp combination does some really wacky EQ things. The CDA-117 has a great DAC for its price and the Alpine PDX amps are some of the only ones that will fit within the space constraints - I didn't want any amps or components to be visible and you can get two PDX's behind the carpet easily. It just happened to be 100% Alpine for that reason, plus their new gear is really good for the price. I used to be a big Focal fan but the new Alpine speakers are really good and the Focal line hasn't been updated in years.

Can't wait to get the subwoofer installed, it will really round it out.

$399.99 for (2) tweeters and (2) 4" midranges...

I'll pass.

Dissappointing indeed. Would have been ok if the kick panel mid-ranges were included as well.

I originally tried to organise the group buy, but BSW never notified me they released the kit. The never sent me spec sheets or pricing either.

price update

Recieved this today from BSW:

"Pricing is not correct. It is going to be ~100 dollars cheaper. That was a 'place holder'."

So...probably more like $299 (ish)...based on their statement. Details to follow.

-----------------
update 3-14-11:

They estimate $300 shipped inc. tool kit would be the price.

These are 2 ohm replacement speakers made of different and apparently better-sounding materials.

The price is now showing as $259 + $5 shipping for the kit.

Can someone confirm if this is only the door speakers (midrange and tweeter)?

$259 doesn't seem too bad, I just wonder how much of an upgrade it is over stock. I actually don't think stock is too bad. It sounds bad when you're running off the Aux but ever since I had a direct connection to my iPod (via Intravee), it sounds pretty decent.

I just sent Halston an email. The reason the first batch didn't make it is because the drivers were bought up by the X5 kits. I'm still disappointed by the price, only 4 door drivers, no rear kit, and promises since December it's "almost ready".

I am also very disappointed I wanted the whole system not 1/3 of a system.

The midrange speakers behind the seats are simply 4 ohm speakers, I believe they are 4", so just grab some off the shelf 4" co-axial speakers and have at it. I used some Alpine co-axials and they sound great. At 4 ohms you won't damage the stock amp or blow the speakers.

To be clear... are the stock speakers in the doors 2 or 4 ohm? Is it feasible to just replace them with a set of Vifa components I have (6.5' drivers / tweets) using the stock amp's power?
