Sounds like the Sport button on the left side of the center console, just by the shifter.

Engaging the Sport Button makes the electric power steering stiffer, the throttle is more responsive, and for automatic transmission cars ( and I think your car is an auto), the transmission shifts up to the next gear at higher rpms. All in all, the character of the car is noticeably very different.

Its the sport button but on the Z4 it also means the DSC. Its the button above the ashtray and changes how much traction assistance you receive. Be careful when messing with that part, one click is usually okay but try not to turn it all the way off unless doing AutoCross.

DSC, one click? If you hit it more than one time it goes off more to all the way?

Lol man that is a perfect description! Bout killed myself when I turned it all the way off when I 1st bought the car. My 2.5i wasn't an issue with it completely off but the 3.0si was different. That said it did have pretty bald tires when I bought it.
