Z4 Coupe Vs. F-Type
I found this interesting....

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

The Car and Driver test I read had the Z4 Coupe at 5.5, but I think I've seen that 5.1 spec too. That's what started this with me. The base Jag F-type really doesn't advance much farther past a 8 year old Z4.

Interesting...Didn't realize the F was so heavy.
I love the sound of the F though. It's gorgeous! On top of the performance, have to admit the Z's are aging really well. 9 years old and people still ask me if it's brand new lol. Kept clean, these cars are just beautiful and still look great from the right angle. -gc |

Not to bring ///M into it, but ///M is an even closer match. A little heavier, but not quite as heavy as the Jag. I'd suspect performance around a track would be a wash.

I think the F-Type Coupe is stunningly beautiful, but the engineering hasn't seemed to advance the art much after 10 years or so.

The numbers are similar but the experience couldn't be different. I love my Z4M coupe and would never give it up for an F-type, but the manual V6-S F-type must be a wonderful thing based on my drives in a auto V6-S. The Jag is a very exiting car; the sound is wonderful, the torque just right there, all the time. Try one. But keep your coupe!

Have any of you ever tried to set a well measured 0-60 time and recorded it? So that is with a vbox or any other 10hz gps device? (so not with an obd2 device or smartphone 1hz gps etc). I know you'll going to find that factory 5.7sec time (thats 0-62mph officially, or rather 0-100kmh) pretty hard to beat. 0-60mph may show up as 5.5 or so, but not 5.1 I think.

I like the sound and interior of the jag but re the exterior, to me I have a hard time telling it from a new Miata, I still get great comments on the Z though!

I agree that the F Coupe is a looker, but in person, the F roadster doesn't stand out to me. Although I confess that it surely sounds great. There is a white F Type roadster here in my town and to be honest, I think it looks a bit plain.

Looking only at 0-60 times it doesn't advance that much further, but that's due to the extra weight that's necessary for all the new safety standards that have been put in place over the past 8 years. I haven't driven the F-Type but I'm willing to bet the sound dampening is much better, the materials feel more solid, and the luxury features/electronics are far better. I don't even have to drive it to know the F-Type is a safer and more comfortable daily driver. All that adds to the weight, which requires a more powerful engine which adds to the price. Because of this, it's hard to compare new cars to old cars.

Does the roadster look different from the coupe aside from the ragtop/roof? I haven't seen the roadster, but the first time I saw the coupe closing the gap behind me I thought it was an exotic car. I like it.

That said, I say driving a car is like listening to loudspeakers... desire to own is much dependent on personal taste.

Yes, you pay for your performance with the F-type. The V8 is not available with a a manual, so that is out for me. But I have to say I am tempted by a V6-S with a manual box. Right now I'm planning on adding an M2 (or F80 M3 if the M2 hoopla is too much for me to put up with - e.g., dealers wanting a surcharge above MSRP, etc.), but I keep looking at this damn car. Less performance, more money...seem like a no-brainer for one of the BMWs. However the coupe looks so good and I am not a street racer.

Top Gear did not like the ride of the F Type at all. Jarring, crashing over bumps, etc. And we all know how biased they are towards the British stuff. Plus IMESHO the level of noise made by the V8 borders on the ridiculous. I like the sound of motors just fine but I don't need a Harley Davidson with gutted mufflers following me around just to prove the point.
