Do our wheels have a clear coat on them?
Was at the store picking up some cleaning products for the first time for the Z (decided to try the Meguirs line of products first) and saw that some of the wheel waxes stated that they should not be used on clear coated rims. Hence the question...
Also, was wondering if any one has used/or has any thoughts on Meguiar's NXT Generation Tech Wax? TIA. |

I would be highly surprised if we didn't have clear coated rims.
I have never used the NXT Gen wax, so can't help you there. I am a dedicated Menzerna fan and am quite fond of polymer sealants so I would lean towards the notion that the NXT product might be a Good Thing(TM).

They are not clear coated at all, to the best of my knowledge, as I have been using Mother's Mag & Aluminum Polish for years to my BMW wheels w/ awesome results..

Interesting - the rims on my 3.0si Coupe with the Sports package have a silver metallic paint job and are not bare metal at all. I would be highly disappointed of there wasn't a clear coat over the silver paint job.
This might differ depending on the rims your car got from BMW, but mine are not bare metal.

Looks like our rims could be "any of the above" from that description. I can see the metallic flakes in the paint job on mine, but that observation does not seem to be applicable to all BMW rims.

Interesting, I hadn't noticed that our rims had been painted. So I guess it would then make sense that they would also be clear coated? They do have a highly glossy appearance to them...

I would guess that if they are painted rims they most likely do have a clear coat. Whether they are painted rims in the first place is the primary question. Get a good light and go look for telltale metallic flakes in the shiny silver surface. If you don't see any than you may have polished metal instead.

Oh another SURE way to find out if they are painted is to look behind the spokes. You will see the small areas behind them where the paint is missing... kind of disappointed with BMW that they kind of took a short cut on the quality of this aspect... but then again you really can't see it unless you look carefully.
