What wrong with the glove box? It holds registration and proof-of-insurance cards pretty well.

Or one glove. One only. Glove box, not gloves box

It does. I leave mine there at times, it's just impossible to reach while driving!

still have and use my original sunglass holder, cup holder, glove holder...err..box.

I never understood how people break them so easily. They aren't THAT fragile.

I guess I am old school. My sunglasses fit the holder fine, they are prescription and live there. What breaks is the latching mechanism. Somebody in England was making a latch repair kit for a while, but NLA. I replaced mine with factory part, I think I paid in the low to mid $300s, which is absolutely ridiculous, but I am just too used to it to abandon it. I think the Real OEM price was in the 20s or 30s; assuming these parts were al manufactured when the cars were built, up through 2008, wouldn't you like to get that kind of return on $30.00 over ten years?

There are some solutions on the forums involving replacing the latch with rare earth magnets, I just did not have the patience.

And dumps even that out every time you open it.

Roadster doesn't have a sunglass holder, but I opened my center storage compartment yesterday and the button broke off.

So, that'll happen.

That happened to me in my Moupe. Priced a replacement, eek! So I took it out and epoxied the broken bits back together. It's good as new now. Just be careful to use epoxy made for plastics.

I was tempted to attempt it with some J-B Weld, but it didn't look like there was enough to get a grip on.
Good to know it's possible.

I have two E86 coupes. The sunglass holder in the 3.0si stopped staying closed last year. So I removed it, tweaked it, and reinstalled it -- reinstallation was a MAJOR PITA. It stays closed now. When I can get it to open. When I can get it to close.

We drove out to Pittsburgh in the M Coupe this past weekend for the Bring A Trailer Alumni Reunion. On the way home I noticed that the sunglass holder was open; it happens, sometimes I forget to close it. So I closed it. A little while later there it was, open again.

I've never put anything but clip-ons in either one so it's not like there's a pound of weight.
Frankly, the sunglass holder in the E86 would have to improve tremendously to just suck. It was designed much too small, the close mechanism has the delicacy of an egg, and is just as susceptible to breakage. These devices are not rocket science, and shame on BMW for finding a way to turn it into such, and make it so fragile and unusable along the way. Makes me question other components in the vehicle. If they can botch something as simple as this, how does that bode for the really important bits?

I don't touch it much but it does have sunglasses in it. The car is only driven in spring, summer, and fall so I don't have to deal w/ uber bright sun reflecting off snow covered land. I also find the car to naturally blocks most of the sun so I don't often need sunglasses. I'm guessing the seating position and low roof line help in that regard.

My Dirty Harry Balorama's don't fit, so I never use the thing. But it's been known since the early days that the thing is a POS and WILL break if you use it regularly.

Wait until you try to remove the steering wheel trims. Impossible to not break them

My sunglasses bin is fine. I have seen most people are in fact rude when using stuff. I ha e never broken anything in a car by just using it as intended.

One of mine broke w/o trying to remove it.

Someone did a DIY repair that I keep meaning to look up.

I had mine replaced under warranty, they put the wrong one in... then put the right one in... that was probably 8-9 years ago. Im not sure if Ive opened it a dozen times since then.... the cup holders on the other hand are total crap!

Harden up guys. Its called planned obsolescence, in fact I think its an engineering term
first used in the USA. Euro car manufacturers were forced in the early 2000's to take a share of the recycled plastics coming out of the EEC and apply to auto manufacturing purposes again.

Mine works great with my wide-framed sunglasses that usually don't fit in other holders. No complaints

Would have to improve just to suck!

You ask, "Coupe folks - does your sunglass holder suck?"
My answer? No, it would have to be vastly improved to just suck! I'm thinking they hired some retired wino from BMC or Leyland to design that POS!

My favourite driving sunglasses don't fit so it never gets opened, kinda small.
