Who has Bass in their Z?
What type size amp do you run? I've got 2 type r's layin around with amps from my previous car. I know space is a premium so I'm just seeing what other run.

I have Jl 300 amp and a 10' W3. DO NOT INSTALL a 10 inch in your car..at least not a JL W3 it is way too much bass for our cabin space. I wish i had installed a 8 inch, but my box was a custom install so i didnt want to throw all that money away on the custom box to redo it. Now I have all these highs from the stock 10 speaker carver system with the bass of the JL. I'm about to add 2 custom 6X9 to some amp to fill in all the midrange that is missing.

where do you guys take your signals from? are you just using the filtered signals from the stock amp? ive been considering putting this in my roadster. dimensions are so perfect it's like it was designed for the car!

I use that JL same JL box in my Mini! It's a great little sub...but where would you put in the roadster? In the trunk?? I think you'd be disappointed.

yeah i was gonna put it in the space next to the battery. i have the plastic panel separating the trunk and cabin removed so im thinking it should be powerful enough to get some base into the cabin. it certainly wont be like my old RE Audio SX15 but im sure it will be a decent addition to the stock carver subs.

Hmmm. You might get lucky. I spent a lot of years in this business. In my experience, you never want to run two "different" sets of subs in two different locations in the same car. You may hit it and get lucky, but it's more likely you'll get a lot of phase cancellation between the carver subs and the JL box.
I would at least disconnect the Carver subs. Now that I have the Mini system at least decent, I may turn my attention to the M. To me, the answer is obvious...finding a larger woofer that can work in the factory locations, with as little fabrication as possible. The Carver subs actually sound very good...they're just incredibly inefficient. I have my eye on some Tang Band 8-inch drivers that work in very small enclosures. For me, it may be as simple as a small digital amp, the Tang Band's, and a new facia plate for the woofers. |

yeah that was a concern but i figured i could just disconnect the carvers and have the jl sub take over. using the factory locations would definitely be optimal but i figured just buying the jl sub/box combo would be the easiest/laziest way to do it. i would be sacrificing space though in exchange for ease.

after a whopping 15 seconds of research, I see that the JL 8W3v3-4's optimum sealed box size is 8.9 liters. Our subs have 10 liters each. This might be easier than I imagined.

I'll be headed to Denver for a month or two on business, and won't be able to tackle this, or give it much thought until I return. I think it will be simple, though. Two 8W3v3's, a JL XD300/1, a middle of the road converter, and some custom fiber-glassing and done. There will be no way to fit the eight inch subs and keep the factory grill, so I'll have to come up with something pleasing to the eye to hold the eights. Not too hard.

The more I read about who has what either on here or other sites, the 8"s form JL seems to be the goto subwoofer of choice, with little to no mods. I want to keep things looking stock so Ill prolly end up going with those. interesting to see pics of what people have for their set up so post em if ya got em!

I believe the 8" won't fit the factory sub enclosures, because the radius of the opening and the depth of the woofer is totally outta spec. You can try fitting the JL 6w3, with spacer it would clear the depth issue but the factory cover will not fit back on so it won't look stock anymore.

I know the factory covers will not sit, I've seen someone on here made covers using fabric, i forgot who but a few other guys I've talk with said that was the best option if i choose 8's. I'm a huge fan of bass so I may even put it in the trunk in a stealth box, but as most know the Z isn't known for its trunk space. I have 40 days till I get home from Afghanistan to figure this out before more money is dropped we'll see how it goes!

I have the Logic7 (Hifi Professional) speakers and the bass is crap. I don't want to install any additional subwoofer, so if anyone can recommend any good replacement for the speakers let me know ..

I have an Alpine HU w Alpine amp in the trunk feeding two JL Audio 10" in a sealed enclosure. I custom trimmed the enclosure to fit under the adjustable shelf in the rear while its in the down position. I then added a S -load of Velcro to the underside of the adjustable shelf so it does not rattle against the sub box (the Velcro actually sticks to the carpet on the box). Lost a lot of trunk space, but hey this is a fun car and I still have enough room to fit anything short of a luggage trunk in the back. As far as bass goes, I have clear bass - not muddy or distorted - up to around 80 mph w top down. The beauty of changing the HU from the junk stocker to an Alpine is that I can dial the sub output up when top is down and lower the sub out put when the top is up. I also cross it over at 80 hz to prevent overdriving the stock speakers when top is down, and turn the cross over off when the top is up to preven excessive bass from the trunk. Seems like a lot of work, but the sound is what I was looking for in terms of bass response.
Clarification - I removed the subs behind the seats to prevent frequency issues. |

Try putting better drivers in the doors and in the stock sub locations. You'll probably get more midbass than you need. You'll never get low frequency's without a subwoofer though. The stock subwoofers get low frequency but they don't deliver enough volume and are terribly inefficient.
