Yea its a tough nut.
I ended up breaking all this little tabs off on mine for ease of removal. You also need to slip a really small screwdriver( I used a scraper) vertically between the 2 half circle connector fingers and pry either way to spread them. Then grip the wire on the metal connector end and pull. A bit nerve racking to start but once you get the first one out you kind of know the amount of force to use and how much to spread the connector. On reassembly be sure to crimp the spread connector down again with a pair of pliers. Good Luck

It's been a bit, but it's finally been diagnosed. I took my car to a bmw specialist locally because I was afraid of damaging the shorting block. They hooked the car up and very quickly pinpointed my issue to the Safety Information Module(or Airbag Control Unit) near the center console behind and under the ebrake.
I'll be going forward with replacing it, as removing the module made the issues go away. The service was quoted at $1600, however I can buy the module for 800 and do it myself. It will require coding though. Anyway, that's that. I hate threads that are loose ends, so hopefully that ties this up. I'll report back if shit hits the fan though. |

It involves removing the center console and getting to the control unit(vaguely under that coin holder(?) in front of storage compartments) Pretty straight forward, however pelicanparts puts it at a 3-5 hour job And yes, I have purchased and am now waiting for it to ship. In the meantime, I drive with no functional airbags. |

Alright. My work is all done. Getting to it involved removing the entire transmission tunnel from the car. That means everything from the convertible controls to the rear storage compartment had to be taken it. Quite the pain especially with some carpet preventing access to screws, but it's all done.
Getting the module out was fairly easy with all that removed, it was just held in with 3 10mm bolts and pulled right out. All in all, about a 3 hour job removing everything, and 2 putting everything back in. The module had to be coded at a bmw specialist, but other than that, nothing finicky. Here's the module, with it removed, and the problem connector. It seems to be that water corroded the plug(from a faulty drainage canal we are all familiar with) and one of the pins broke off because of that. Glad that all my problems have gone away. I was having issues with controlling the top, all my light related stuff wasn't working(blinkers), and sometimes even my car wouldn't stop. I was quoted $2400 for the shop to do the maintenance entirely, but I did it myself. Module was $900 and coding was $180. |

SOLVED!!! I had all the same exact symptoms described and discovered my airbag module was corroded!!!! See Pics .Major part of KBUS issues. Advise all to at least check it out.. Just unplug it and everything works properly !!! Be advised your airbags won't work unless you replace the module. Also, you don't
have to remove the entire center console to just unplug the airbag module, just need to remove the upper portion between the seat backs...kinda tough if you cant get the top down, otherwise it can be accomplished at home. There are some YouTube videos on removing the center console, but watch the latter portion to see how to remove only what you need to move...I learned the hard way!!! Good luck. |
