Coupe folks - does your sunglass holder suck?

Is it just me, or is anyone else seeing the sunglass holder being less than reliable?

I have two E86 coupes. The sunglass holder in the 3.0si stopped staying closed last year. So I removed it, tweaked it, and reinstalled it -- reinstallation was a MAJOR PITA. It stays closed now. When I can get it to open. When I can get it to close.

We drove out to Pittsburgh in the M Coupe this past weekend for the Bring A Trailer Alumni Reunion. On the way home I noticed that the sunglass holder was open; it happens, sometimes I forget to close it. So I closed it. A little while later there it was, open again.

I've never put anything but clip-ons in either one so it's not like there's a pound of weight.

Hrm, mine isn't broken (yet) but like everything else in the car it's weirdly tiny, and seems to only serve to heat up my sunglasses if I've dared to park somewhere outside.

I think of it more like an undersized toaster oven.

I bought a used sunglasses holder from a forum member here when mine broke stuck closed. It's held up well so far, it's been a few years, but I stopped storing stuff in the sunglasses holder.

Since the car is out of production for so long, a "new" holder is like $200. So I don't tough it unless I have to.

Plus my new sunglasses won't fit.

Hm. I've noticed it to be open when I reach for my glasses sometimes. I always figured I forgot to close it (which doesn't make much sense - you put the glasses in and obviously would close it). I'll pay closer attention now that you brought this up.

If a single door gets closed hard enough it will open by itself. It happens a few times a year

Try $400. I defaulted to not using mine as it works fine and I would like to keep it that way hah. The BNIB cost and work involved is not worth it.

I don't have any sunglasses that fit in it so I never use it. If I park the car outside on a hot day, it is sometimes open when I get back to the car. I've never looked into why it pops open on its own or if I could modify/tweak the clasp to keep it shut since it stays closed most of the time.

BTW, I keep my sunglasses in the leatherZ center console.

Dibs!

More generally, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one having issues. Perhaps I should revisit sunglasses storage in the zeds, and put the factory sunglasses holder on the 'do not touch' list next to the cupholders.

LOL. Pretty much where I'm headed. I didn't realize there was a problem with the sunglass holder too.

Reading this thread has me worried as well - especially after seeing the $400 USD replacement cost. Didn't realize this would be a problem part but I won't be using it now.

When I had my Z4MR I added the underseat first aid boxes specifically to hold my sunglasses as there was nowhere else to put them (didn't fit in the door pockets or glovebox and I found the center console inconvenient). I think I'll be putting them in the coupe now for the same reason.

It was the one storage space in the damn car that was useful. Come to find out it is likely to break and cost way too much to fix, so we shouldn't use it.

My holder was too small for my sunglasses. I got croakies on my glasses and they just hang from the rearview.

i didn't know this was a trouble area! I use it all the time and keep my sun glasses there. I've even had the liner out of the car to install the carbon roof. guess I will stop using it to save myself an expensive replacement if it ever goes.

I think mine has allways been more of a downward aiming sunglass catapult.

So I've worn glass since I've been 6 years old... In fear of this problem, for my last pair of glasses I went with titanium frames just to keep the weight down that the sunglasses tray has to hold.

Kidding...

I've had one instance when the tray opened, but it was after hitting a serious bump on a back road at about 60 MPH. I do try to park inside as much as possible.

What wrong with the glove box? It holds registration and proof-of-insurance cards pretty well.
