S54 Z4MR - Hiccup at Idle

Has anyone ever noticed a slight hiccup at idle? This rarely ever happens to me, but today I was at a red light and while at idle, their was just slight hiccup and the RPM's dipped for just a slight second.

I was wondering if any of you have noticed this in your car.

Thanks!

Very common.
There are some old discussions on this with more than one idea as to why.

On my first Z4M, this happened about five times during my ownership of the vehicle. Always sitting at a stoplight, car felt like it was going to stall etc. but then roared back to life. I owned the car for about two years.

My second Z4M, which I've owned now for about two and half years, had never done it once until last week! I was sitting at a stoplight, and it did the very same thing my other car had done. Back to normal immediately afterwards.

Both cars were/are tanks, not a single issue between them. Odd little quirk! ;D

Mine's been getting worse lately.
Used to happen only once in a while, only after cruising for a long time and then pulling off the freeway and coming to a stop, only on < 1/4 tank of gas, and only in hot weather.
Now I have a 50/50 chance of hiccups even after a short cruise and a full tank regardless of weather.

I have a new set of O2 sensors in the spare parts drawer.
I just passed 150k miles, so I think next week it'll be time to swap them out and see if that helps.

Happened to mine many times, cleaned up the idle control valve and throttle bodies with MAF cleaner and it helped out significantly.

150K miles!! Amazing!!

On topic, I've experienced the occasional RPM dip at idle, but it's usually just a little flutter. All of my modified cars have this at one point or another, my old FD RX-7 was really bad -- I had to raise the idle to smooth it out, but that car had more aftermarket parts than original.

Voltage regulator on alternator for was causing this. Check for codes!

Sometimes it is the Throttle Position Sensor

So the idle, especially after getting off the freeway after a long cruise, hadn't been getting any better, and I got limp mode upon starting about 3 times in as many weeks.

Codes were:
2CF6 Throttle Position Sensor #1 plausibility versus Mass Air Flow
2D09 Throttle Valve

Battery is barely over a year old, but I pulled it out and took it up to AutoZone.
Darn. Load tests fine.

I had 2 new TPSs in the spare parts drawer, made an educated guess that TPS1 was the one on the front, and swapped it out.

Fixed.
Idle is perfectly smooth. And I've had 4 long trips in the last week that would have routinely given me the rough idle.

Now I need to find a DIY on TPS2. I can't even find it. There's a plastic cover over the rear of the throttle rail, but even sticking my fingers up underneath of it, I can't feel anything that feels like a TPS.

StickMon,

That's interesting that you were having different results based on gas tank level. Do you think that was just coincidence, or is their some strange connection between fuel level and throttle position sensor?

Stickmon,

Is it on the end of the throttle actuator (just above the red wire) in this photo?

If so, then it looks like changing the sensor is a breeze...after you get the intake manifold off.

A small write-up with pics:

Those were just sudden stalls like many others have reported. Only happened 3-4 times in as many years.
Always hot weather, always on < 1/4 tank, always after getting off the freeway and stopping at a light.

My more recent problem was much more often, and independent of weather or gas level, but was worse after a long run on the freeway.
And it wasn't just an out-of-the-blue stall. It would bob around, miss a cylinder or two, grumble and hunt ...

Duh. Yep. That's it.
The actuator's in the middle. I was looking for it on the back end of the rail like a mirror image of the front.

Thanks for the links!!!

Mine's only done it once, but it never stalled.

While I'm here, what do your cars idle at? Mine is at close to 900 RPM, which seems a lot higher than my other BMW's.

Sounds normal. Mine's anywhere from 870-900, depending on small variables like what RPM it was at when I hit the clutch, how fast did I come to a stop, is the heater blower running ...
What kind of mood is it in that day ...
