M Backing plates for brake cooling & bumper inlet

3" may be better than 2 but not if the extra width requires more bends. Suffice to say any ducting is better than none so I would go as big as you can that will fit without having to run extra length or bends.

Another thing to keep in mind is plastic flanges may flex when you tighten the clamp around the hose so be sure to pick hardware that's rigid. I went plastic first time but it was a major PITA to secure the hoses so I later swapped for metal ones.

i hear you buddy.... i wish bmw would have done this properly from the off tbh as the vents in the lower section are in a great position to feed air into the wheel area.... sadly they left it at that...

I can report that the e46m backing plates from Hard Motorsport are not going to work. The knuckle bolt pattern is off and the steering arm will not allow the duct mount to clear. I'm altering the plates to make them work but it would of been the same amount of work just to fab plates from scratch. I had to cut off the duct and drill new mount holes as well as a hole for the wheel speed sensor.

I need to cover the current holes on the plate and relocate the duct mount then start on the other side.

I may end up starting from scratch rather than order the E36 and find it doesn't work.
I'm thinking about contacting Turner, they used to sell an E85 plate.
They might be able to shed a little more light on this.

I suspect it's a discontinued product.

The other complication for me is the BBK and that I want to run 2" duct to make routing easier.

Yeah I contacted Turner on this before and they said that the e86 kit was discontinued. I think you were right before Ian. The e36 kit may have been closer to correct then the e46 but it's kind of an expensive experiment.

looks like it... but the bolt locations look the same as the e46 ones, so I'm guessing this will need to be re-drilled.... tbh i didn't really the hubs were e36, i though they were e46 to use the CSL rotor and caliper.

Yes I think the CSL is the same part number on the oem for the backing plates between m3 and z4m. I looked for m3 csl brake duct backing plates but couldn't find any for sale. Probably because they're just as rare on the road as our cars.

So all my parts are in for the brake duct job but still need to finish up the backing plates. The car is torn apart to do some other repairs as well so it may be a few weeks before it's on the ground again.

Below is a good picture of what I will be doing with the duct inlet. I need to do some prep to get the black to stick to the aluminum but I think it's worth it.

I was just getting ready to update on this. I've been busy with several projects on the car but I got around to putting my finished backing plates, solid caliper bushings, and pfc08 pads on this weekend. I have to install the inlets, run the duct, bleed the brakes, and test on the track yet. 😊

I have access to a fab shop. Has anyone taken the existing backing plate and cut a hole and welded an inlet flange on it?

The OE isn't ideal to modify because it steps away from the rotor at the front with a quasi air scoop.
The inner sector of the rotor (air inlet) needs to be closed off as much as possible with the hose flange injecting air at that point so that air draws up and through the rotor vanes.

Ducts are installed but I've yet to have time to hit the track. I'm happy with the fit and the clearance is good with size tire and offset I'm running up front. The tire only makes contact with the duct at full lock.

I'm still trying to figure out some sort of wide mesh I can use to cover the duct opening to keep debris out or maybe just a plug I can use for street driving.
