A thought that snowballed into a DYI wrap job

My recount of the past 2 weeks when I found some left over vinyl and though "I wonder what the coupe would look like wrapped in this";
  1. So I stuck it on the door, "Not bad but I really need to see a larger section". I'll order a coupe yards and wrap the door to see what that looks like.
  2. Hey that wasn't bad and the door turned into rear quarter and then the entire left side.
  3. Well I still have some left over so might as well do the other side and see if I can do it better.
  4. Oh Crap, the car looks like a skunk now, I should order some more and see if I can manage the bumpers and hood
  5. Well the hood was harder then then the door that's for sure.
  6. Let's do the bumper....... Holy Mother #$%! that YouTube bumper DYI that took buddy 50mins took me 5 hours.
  7. Why did I start this? Me and my big ass ideas, I'm in too deep now and it would be stupid to turn back, might as well finish it.
  8. Rear bumper taught me I don't have patience.
  9. Ran out of vinyl and still have to do the hatch, roof and mirrors. I go to order more vinyl but find out they are back ordered till Sept 11th.
  10. Guess I can do the roof back.

So now I wait till Sept 11.

Haven't driven for 3 weeks so was itching to get out and snapped some pics. First photo is the original car colour Silver Grey and the rest are Avery Gloss Metallic Grey wrap.

Love it! We should start the full wrap club!

Btw keep an eye out for the corners. I have Avery on mine as well and noticed the corners peel back after few days.

We totally should start a WRAP picture thread and maybe a DYI as well. There are some things that I'd do differently that's for sure.

Total for this job is $675 CAD so around $500 USD, it could have been less though if I actually measured out how much vinyl I'd actually need initially and not did it 3 orders. I think I'll have 3 yards left so could of possibly saved around $100 CAD.

This looks awesome! While I loved the original Silver Grey, this shade gives it a completely different personality, almost sinister looking.

Question is, now that it's (more or less) done and you know the work that it takes, would you do it again? Or would you pay somebody to do it for you? Based on the pictures I think you did an awesome job. I'm considering doing a gloss black roof for my M3, this is making me think I should try to tackle it myself.

I just put my sunglasses on when I want the car to look darker.

But seriously - looks awesome! And now you are an Internet Wrap star!

Well the job looks good from far but it's far from good and I can admit that. I can understand why companies charge as much as they do, guess experience and patience have a price. I did 1 or 2 panels each night and tried to take my time which didn't always go to plan but overall it was manageable. I think that having an extra pair of hands would of saved me so much time that's for sure. So I would try it again and I know I'd do a much better job the 2nd time around. If I got someone that could help me to lay it down initially that would be SO helpfull, or I'd just have the bumpers done professionally and do everything else myself.

I tried the roof myself before and failed and almost did this time too. The coupe roof I found extremely difficult to do by myself, would have been way easier with 2 people. But I think the M3 roof is pretty flat so I think it be much easier, the only thing is it's pretty big so if you screw up you lost a lot of material probably as much as the labor if you got it done.

I'm close enough that if you ever need a second pair of hands don't be shy to ask! Would be happy to help out.

Appreciate the insight - I can't imagine shops will charge too much for a gloss black roof so I'll likely go that route. I have the sunroof to worry about too, but other than that it is relatively flat.

Dumb question - how durable is this stuff? Do you wash the car more or less in a normal fashion once this is applied? No issue driving on a windy rainy day?

And if you decide to remove it next year, do you just peel it all off?

wow that's quite an undertaking.... very impressed that you worked it through.
I tried doing my roof in gloss black (b4 carbon) and it was a terrible fail ..

Colour looks great on the car

I think I might hit you up on that. I think $250-$300.

I don't know but I think its pretty durable, wind has no effect on it and when you are ready it peels off.

Stellar job man! When I first saw a pic on IG I had assumed it was camera settings/lighting making it darker. Impressive you took on the challenge and wrapped the whole thing yourself!

Thanks! ya when you're looking at it in direct sunlight the gloss really reflects a lot so it doesn't seem dark but when I was wrapping it you can really see the contrast.
