Any decent sized tool kit should have the screwdriver heads for torx screws.

disconnecting the battery seems like a pain in the ass since I have limited access to tools here. Can I safely get away with letting the car sit for 30 minutes before taking out the DME?

Got there and popped the hood, locked the car and let the DME cool down and the car go into sleep mode - waited maybe 20 minutes (30 would be safe). Took out the DME, had the ESS software loaded. Plugged it all back in, started up the car, and drove home.

I believe standard ESS tune is 8200 ( a slight bump in rev limiter over stock).

I think stock is set at 7.9k and the ESS software bumps it up to 8.2k
Either way, you're not going to want to constantly bounce off the rev-limiter. As it was explained to me, the extra increase is mostly for dragging or tracking the car - it allows you to hold that gear a bit longer, which could make all the difference.

Ok, I think I may not be understanding one of the features of the onboard computer. There is an RPM adjustment in one of the menus. When you set this, does it not limit how high you can get the RPMs or does it just alert you when you surpass the set value?
Just shipped off the DME, should arrive on Thursday @ 1030a UPS -- Roman, I forgot to indicate on the paperword that I paid for express return shipping. Can you relay this to the ESS guys? thanks |

Hmmm... I didn't drive my M today, so I can't go out and check, but are you sure you're talking about the RPMs and not MPH?
Most newer BMWs (our cars included I think) have the speed warning chime. This can be set to any speed, and will make an audible chime when you pass that speed. So lets say the speed limit around you is 70mph; you can set it for 78 or so, and that way if you're cruising along and get a bit too throttle happy it'll serve as a gentle reminder to check your speedo. The M cars also have the variable redline. Start your car for the first time that day, and you'll notice that revving to 5k or so would put you in the yellow. As everything gets to operating temperatures, the final redline of 8k is shown.

One other thing I am noticing about the software is that my mpg has gone back up to pre 4.10 days. It is directional at this point b/c I only have 1 tank of gas on the tune, but I will confirm once I get a few more tanks of gas I can measure. If that is true, then 4.10 plus a tune FTW. Also, I am not driving more conservatively...if anything, I am having a little more fun with the tune for right now.

My ECU is done! There were some strange circumstances, but thanks to the fine work of Todd, Asbjorn, and a few others in Germany I'll finally have my ECU back tomorrow.
