Alarm not working

Hello all. I have a problem with my alarm on my 2004 Z4 3l. I bought this car in Jan 08 so am kinda new to bmw's. I have tried the panic button on the fob and that didn't work. It locks everything ok but the alarm doesn't work. Left the windows down and tried to unlock it by sticking my arm inside the car. Wouldn't unlock and no alarm. It has a little round lite under the mirror but it has never flashed. I looked at the fuses in the glove box but there isn't a fuse for alarm system. I know this is kinda a stupid question but does my car even have an alarm system? It has sport and premium options. Is it possible that it has been unhooked? And where would I look to check it out if it has.
Thanks for any help

You do not have an alarm, unless it was installed as a dealer-added option. There is an after-market BMW alarm system that works with the clown nose. It costs a little over $200 with a cockpit motion sensor. I'm told the DIY install is medium difficulty. Even if you DIY, you still will need to have the dealer add it to your programmable options.

I have all the options premium, sport, convenience, but had to BUY the alarm and had it installed when I picked up the car from the dealer. No blinky red light, no alarm.

Btw, you can get anything out of the car with the alarm on and not set it off. It only locks certain things like the center console and i believe the glove box.

Not if you have the cockpit motion sensor option. Yon can buy the alarm with or without it. The difference is about $130 (with the sensor)

Technically if you move very slowly you can get by the motion detector as well. It was on Mythbusters.

my dealer didn't know of that option...just said there was no way to accomplish people not being able to get into an open convertible with the alarm engaged.....and THAT was exactly what I was TRYING to accomplish.

Thanks, I'll inquire next time I take it in.

Thank you all for your replys. I just figured an expensive car like the bmw's would have a very good alarm system in it. Since most other cheap cars come with one from factory. It says how it works in the manual so thats why I kinda thought it had one.
Thanks again

Well...the alarm isn't really going to be anything more than a nuisance to a determined thief anyway...

Just a reminder...the manual addresses every possible option whether you have them or not. It's up to you to know what was included as options with your car. If you do not have the data, call the dealer and they can print one for you.

I agree. A pro will not be deterred. Youngsters looking for a joyride will be. For the cost of the equipment with a diy install, I think it's worth it, if only for peace of mind.
