Interesting chart. Is there something similar for colorectal (bowel) screening?

Risk of colorectal cancer (CRC): In an asymptomatic patient >50yr old, the risk of CRC is about 1 in 200. In a symptomatic patient group, without qFIT testing, the risk of CRC is 3.3% Using qFIT as a test in symptomatic patients defines 2 groups: qFIT positive, with a risk of CRC of 16% qFIT negative group (without IDA or a mass), with a risk that is below the asymptomatic population i.e. 1cm, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Cancer): qFIT400 - >50% chance of significant pathology |

Are trying to say that detecting prostate cancer earlier than stage IV does not offer any benefits to the patient? That seems like dangerous nonsense. Trying to go from epidemiology to individual decisionmaking is a tricky business (business being the operative word here, as what is usually being saved is $).

Does it mean 68 colonoscopy referrals were correct, out of n=2000? In layman's terms, 3.4% correct referral rate? BMC looks like a useful resource, thanks for bringing it to light. Last edited by chassis; 09-08-2024 at 08:08 AM.. |

Ie if Qfit is normal 99%sure you don't have cancer. A screening test is good if it excludes cancer Out of 1000 people with normal qfit only 1 could have cancer. So Over 50's getting a qfit test which is quite a simple test every 1-2 years is the best insurance policy to pick up any colorectal cancer before any symptoms arise at an early stage. |

I react terribly to insect stings. Not to an Epipen degree, but yeah a degree of nastiness

Thanks Rick, luckily we keep the 7-6-5-4-3-2-1 prednisone prescription in our camping gear & in the car. Sucks for timing, as I was getting ready to complete work on our second unit facade rebuild. I helped with one handed duty.

I went through a few years of getting stung by yellow jackets every year and it seemed to always be in the same spot on my left hand -- and would swell up like that. Haven't been stung in years, fortunately.

I am allergic to bees, but went through a dedensification program as a kid. My reactions are now like that and tend to resolve themselves with a strong dose of Benedryl. Parents say I came within 5 minutes of dying twice, but only remember one of those. I look at getting stung now as a booster shot.
On another note related to this thread, I got the pleasure of having my gallbladder removed a few days ago. The thing ruptured while they were taking it out, causing them to keep me in the hospital an extra day or two. |

I never mentioned my root canal without Novocaine. I'm a walking malpractice suit.
On the topic of medical issues, is there an official name for the hand/arm motions of elderly people (not naming a prominent politician as an example) where they walk with their hands forward like they are carrying an invisible walker or bracing themselves for a fall? I caught myself doing that the other day, and want to know what it is to do my homework before an upcoming doctor appointment in a few weeks.....
