Speakers behind the seats

Hello all,
I just acquired a 2006 Z4M. I've only had it a week or so but I really love it. 38K miles on her. I have been poking around to see what is what and if all thing operate as intended. When I turned on the radio, I moved the balance and front/rear and found the speakers behind the seat had very little output and equally weak sound quality. I guess I expected those to Boom based on their size. Is that how they are supposed to be? Both speakers were the same so its not a blown speaker. if anything the power to the rear channel is shot??
Any advice would be appreciated.

They're subs.

Perhaps. They don't sound like any sub I've ever heard; No Base. all the base is coming from the front speakers.

Do you have DSP? If you do, check the equalizer and settings. The default settings are pretty meh.

Try this thread for suggestions on eq settings. A good starting point.

OK, I have messed with them initially but I'll spend a bit more time poking around with the settings

The more I google this issue the more I find others with similar issues

it seems one solution is to fade almost fully back and then use the volume to bring the volume up in the front. there seems to be plenty of power to get good volume out of the front while still faded almost fully back. Sounds pretty good

Keep in mind that they are subwoofers so they aren't going to be firing all the time. Now if you're a dubstep fan, sure your setup of fading to the back makes sense... But you've got 6 speakers up front and only 4 in the back (if you have the premium) so you're missing out on the speakers designed to capture the highs. Simply upping the volume is going to overwork the fronts and could result in tinny sounding highs and crackling.

That being said, if it sounds good to you, that's all that really counts.

Both my subs were broken. Pull off the grill and make sure the speakers are vibrating. If they aren't, they may be blown. It appears to be common problem. It's an internal wire that gets broken.

In both of my cars with DSP, I found that when you fade to the rear, only the small mids give any sound at all... I thought the same thing,.... that the subs were blown... I then took the grills off where I can see the subs and faded back to center... They work fine.. It's just the way these Carver subs are configured with the DSP amp and radio......

I was going to say the same thing - mine are the same. I don't think the subs are counted as "rear" by the fader, so when you fade to back only mine seem to stop too. But when I play something bassy with the fader where I keep it - I get good bass out of them.

My rear speaker ( on the picture) miss out on some sounds and sometimes sound awful. I thought they are blown but seem fine. What do I do? Replace them or replace the wire as suggested/ implied here?

First off, the subs don't sound very good. So don't expect too much from them. If they are cutting out, then it could be the wire that is soldered in the speaker periodically touching the contact and working. But usually it either works or it doesn't. I looked into replacing them but there were not many options at the time. BMW uses a strange Ohm, I think 12 if I remember correctly. Most speakers are 2,4 or 8. And the box does not have a lot of room either, so that limits your speaker options.

I ended up just removing them, saving the weight, and enjoying the sounds of the engine!

I am surprised there isn't a company offering refurbishment. It is likely quite fixable if you have the know how.
