I'm old enough to remember pre-lawsuit when your only choice was to rent a phone from Ma Bell.

Speaking of which, knowing Ma Bell is a good sign that you are old enough to know why it is rude to be on my lawn.....

I have a BS in math and have never been able to balance a checkbook. Even when I did it for my dad using Excel, I could never do it.

So I use my bank app (you geezers know that terminology, correct?) and check that my deposits match what my LES says, verify charges, and then see that there is still a number greater than zero, we can go to dinner tonight!!!

Checks are still viable for some situations. Now, if you are STILL using them in the line at checkout at your grocery store you are officially too old.

I have a checkbook.
Somewhere.
I think.
I'd have to hunt it up.
I hope it's right where I left it. (yikes!) Ya'll going to make me go look now.

I’ve never used them at checkouts. I only use them to pay bills.

Some folks are just wired that way I guess.
I don't use debit cards. I don't know about now, but when they first came out they offered nearly 0 fraud protection. So if you get skimmed they could clean out your account and you had no recourse. So to this day I either use cash or credit.

Still not much protection. We have 2 checking accounts: The "big" account and the "small" account. Small account gets a couple hundred bucks a week transferred in automatically and it's what we use for around town debit card transactions: Dinner out, Home Depot, etc. We draw it down to close to zero and then it fills back up again. hence our need to balance that account's checkbook closely. it also means if someone snags our debit card and empties the account we are out a few hundo. Not the ned of the world.

Wifey writes about 4 or 5 checks a month to the few places who are still not up with the times and allow direct payments or payments by cc. Plus we pay folks like the hair salon, pet sitter, and dry cleaner with a check. We do the same; check online to make sure deposits are correct and checks/ATM withdrawals are correct. We never get anywhere near a zero balance, so there's no need to balance the checkbook. Can't remember the last time I used my ATM card for a debit payment.

You know you're old when you look around and realize that you are now part of "Those blithering idiots" you've been railing about at work all these years. I'll hit 40 years of service next year. I guess you could also say that you're old if you had one job your whole career. Not many of us left nowadays that haven't been let go, downsized, rightsized, or sold out.

I still have a checkbook and may write one a month or so. The bank won me over when they offered Bill Pay for free about ten years ago. That saved me $10 a month in stamps. You give up the float, but it was worth it. Now everything goes through credit cards to earn points. I have my son to thank for that.

Yeah. I recall playing golf with the younger guys because the "old dudes" play from the short tees. Thinking now my future holds shorter tees.

He use to scare us as little kids with his glass fake eye.

They lasted 2 years there before moving to SC.

Her brother (My Uncle) was old enough to stay in Brooklyn when they moved, so he didn't go. Got mixed in with the wrong crowd and was shot in the head about 5 years later.

My brother and I snuck into a Led Zeppelin concert at some coliseum in LA, got caught and kicked out, snuck in again, smoked something wrapped in a funny-looking paper, got caught again and this time the police took us home, which earned me a right good a$$ whipping.
All I remember about the music is it was loud and weird, and it seemed like all the people there needed a shower. Stinky hippies.

I was born and raised in Bensonhurst, which was one of the better neighborhoods. Solid Italian, but lots of the Soprano stuff going on which ironically kept the neighborhood safe.

Sorry to hear about your uncle.

A new member from TN! I'm about an hour from you.

I am a direct result of the change in business over the years. Growing up, my father worked for the same company from the time he was 18 until the company packed up and moved to Mexico. The next position he took, he stayed with until he passed. Many of other family members and friends/acquaintances were the same way. Almost every company that I have worked for, I stayed with until they closed the doors. Extremely frustrating to be a good employee and being forced change careers, as many times as I have, in order to stay employed. In the past, considering whether or not the company you are applying with, will remain in business for as long as you want to be employed wasn't a concern like it is today. Seems everything is disposable nowadays.

Welcome to the forums!
