Shift Lights
Hey Guys,
There IS a way to get shift lights for the Z4M. I installed the shift-i set on my baby a couple weeks ago, works great! The way to do it is to wire it to the wires running to the OBD II port from the inside. I will post more info as soon as I get a couple pics. |

Shift Lights
Its the Shift-i unit from Ecliptech (www.ecliptech.com.au) it has three wires that need to be spliced, switchable power, square wave tach signal and ground.
Using the OBD II BMW pinout and BMW wiring diagram( http://www.bmw-planet.com/diagrams/release/en/index.htm) you can see that you need to splice the wires to: (there are 7 wires that come from the opposite side of the OBD II) 1 switchable power which is the green and brown wire, 2 rpm/tach signal which is the black wire and 3 ground which is the brown wire. It sounds more difficult than is actually was. the real PITA was working on my back in the foot well connecting the wires up. Hopefully the two pictures I uploaded came through. |

Shift Lights
Its awesome at the track as you know EXACTLY where you are in the RPM range while keeping your eyes forward. I program the first light to come on around 4000rpm and the redline (when they are all flashing) at around 7400rpm

Shift Lights
4000rpm was somewhat arbitrary, but for track driving you typically like to stay much higher in the powerband of your particular engine. (all you need to do is drive down the hwy in 4th gear to see how much more power, and hence better acceleration you get higher in the rev band)
If I'm on track and I don't see any lights on, then I know that I am too high of a gear. More Importantly though, I like to know how many revs I have left before I have to shift, as it can be difficult to "hear" where you are with both with the driver side window down, and with a helmet on. Looking down at the tach would be great but for example at 120mph on a front straight means that you are covering 176 ft/sec, and a lot can happen in 176 ft. As for programming the ECU, you may have to with other units, but this one you don't. There are two buttons on the front that you push to calibrate/program it for your application. It honestly took about 5 min or so, after I had all the wiring done to get it working properly. |

Is that really your perspective sitting in the car? Given my height, seat position, and where I like the steering wheel (in my lap), I would have no view of that area of the dash. I can't see the important parts of my speedo (40-80 mph) or tach (4500-7500 rpm), or my turn signal indicators. I very tempted to saw off the top third of my steering wheel. |

At first I had the lights coming on from 5k-7800 but I have now changed and have them on coming on from 7k-7850rpm
