2007 Auto trans, sport vs normal slipping

I have a 2007 3.0si with an automatic trans. The whole thing has been as reliable as a BMW can be, and a joy to drive. I replaced the trans after a trailer hitch impaled it early one morning on I-75. The replacement used trans slips going from 2nd to 3rd on heavy acceleration, but it won't slip at all when the Sport mode button is selected. I may replace the valves and seals in the Mechatronics, but if it functions normally in Sport I wonder if someone has a more experienced opinion of what the problem might be. When driving in sport mode, nothing I do can make it slip.
