Noticed some clunking when driving at certain angles up a driveway so I decided to tighten up the strut tower bolts, this one in particular just wouldn't tighten and would spin freely. Took off the nut and all these shavings came out everywhere, now when I look at the stud the threads are clearly stripped out.

Does anyone have any recommendations to how to go about fixing this? Is it possible to hammer out the old stud and run a new bolt/nut through there? Thanks!

Depending on what the backside looks like, you might be able to take a cutoff wheel and cut the stud flush and then drill it out and replace it with a bolt.

Backside is a flat piece which appears to be tack-welded on by a few points. So it appears that I should try to take this stud out and put my own bolt in?

I'm not saying it's the best option, but should work. The backside is flat and should function like a washer. I would dab some JB Weld on it so it stays in place when you take off the strut bars.

So you're saying to drill it out then use the tack welded piece to act as a washer and put JB weld on it?

My idea is to drill it out and then remove the tack welded piece and place a washer down, use a nut and bolt to attach it and if things work I'll have a shop tack weld it in place

Just put a bolt through it and you should be fine.
If you can get a wrench on it, Bob's your Uncle.
If not, I would try a star washer to keep it from spinning.

I would try and Dremel off the weld(s) to get the original bolt out.

My problem's at the other end. One of the mounts to the shock tower snapped off.

The threads at the top of the stud looks fine, get a thick enough shim and a new nut. For both sides if you want it to look OEM like.

The stud is spot welded not tack welded.
The fusion is hidden under the mushroomed head. What you are seeing is the molten metal that ran out during the process.

I suggest:
1. Cut off the stud flush to the bracket.
2. Drill a pilot hole as close to centre of the left over stud.
3. Finish drilling through with a bit 2mm larger than the original stud.
4. Insert a metric bolt to replicate original stud.

Good luck with your repair.

This might be worth a shot as it's clearly the easiest solution.

Removing the welded stud will be very difficult as will welding in a new one due to the poor access.

I did a bit of stitch welding on those brackets for that very reason.

I didn't even think about this until a local forum member told me last night. We're going to try to rethread the stud this week and place a new nut on it. I've already ordered new bolts to go on all of them.

Thank you to everyone for the great input!
