Z4M Oil Drain Plug

Hello,

Does anyone know if there is a magnetic drain plug for the Z4M engine oil. I'm only finding results for magnetic plugs for the differential.

Also, when using the stock plug, do you replace it with each oil change? A 6mm hex seems like it would be prone to stripping.

I don't know of a magnetic drain plug but I have also not looked. I just replace the copper gasket when I change oil, not the plug itself. If you're stripping it you're using far too much torque; everything is aluminum including the threads themselves. Go easy.

Even though the filter comes with a new copper washer I generally don't replace it and it seals just fine, no leaks.

It is important to follow the torque spec for many items on the Z4M.

It is my understanding the following is the torque spec for:

Oil Pan Plug: 18 ft lbs
Oil Filter Bolt: 24 ft lbs

Overtightening is the most common mistake that causes failure(s).

Strongly suggest using a torque wrench to ensure torque values are upheld.

I also suggest getting a hex driver set. Makes it way easier and less likely to strip the hex portion (not the thread).

Wow…are you using one of these? It looks different from z4 bolts so I’m curious about compatibility. I’ll send the an email.

Folks - prompted by this threaded, I ordered and received one of the DrVanos magnetic plugs. I haven't installed it yet but thought I'd give you my initial impressions. First shipping was very fast. Order it on Monday, received it on Wed. Shipped from TX to Mid Atlantic (VA). Packaged well. Quality looks very good. Comes with a new aluminum crush washer.

Magnet is quite strong given the size. Probably Neodymium. I used a suitcase scale to measure its strength. The magnet can support 2.2lbs (1kg). So plenty strong to capture metal shavings in the oil.

I'll be installing at my next oil change and will report more then and after the subsequent oil change.
