Battery Dead... Autocraft AGM?

My old battery died, the tender wont charge it, says error.

Anyone used the Autocraft Platinum AGM from Advance Auto Parts Before ?

So 4-5 years ago, I got my last AGM off autozone for 149, now its 199-225 for the battery.

Advanced Auto Part is running a 25% off promotion, check the top of the screen for that 25% off link when you go to the website.

So its 199 - 50 + 5 core = 154.99 + tax

My 7 year old AGM was dead and wouldn't charge on my smart charger due to voltage too low. Hooked up an old school charger for a while then put my smart charger back on and completed the charge. Battery charged up fine and now has been working for several months. YMMV.

No experience w/ autocraft but I'm sure AA uses the lowest bidder for their battery supplier.

From the small bit of research I've done, most of the major brands buy their AGMs from the same manufacturers.
Long ago I posted pics from the websites of 3 major auto parts retailers, and from the fine details of the battery cases, you could tell they were all the same one, just with different labels.

Bottom line, the Autocraft is probably a fine battery, and likely will be from the same manufacturer as a comparable one from AutoZone, O'Reilly, Pep Boys, etc.

I've only had my Advanced Auto's AGM battery in the vehicle for 10 months now, but I can tell you the appearance and the fit are identical to the original...and it performs as expected.

In my experience AGM or LA give the same results. I started with the OEM AGM - 5yrs it was dead. Second time a LA was used for lower cost and it lasted 5yrs. Replaced it with another LA a couple of years ago. That being said the deal you posted would probably make me go AGM if it was available. I paid about that much for my last LA battery.

In my experience, AGM usually only cost about $10 more than their LA counterpart. I like the extra RC that AGM provides and don't have to worry about potential leaks

My old school charger doesn't do AGM either, I put it on long enough to get the battery voltage up some, then switched over to the smart charger. Worked for me.

Picked up the battery last night.. Made 8/18 and has a made in Germany sticker. Seems good so far.

I only use Autocraft as replacements because of the AA discounts. Never had issue with any of them on my past 3 BMW’s.

I really have to ask after reading this thread, what is the advantage of an AGM? I mean if you have to keep it on a charger and they die after 7 years, I see no difference than a wet-cell type.

If you're going to keep it on a charger weekly and don't live in an extremely cold climate, then there's no advantage of using an AGM. You can just go longer in between charges if you got an AGM since it has a low self-discharge rate. AGM has very low internal resistance, is capable to deliver high currents on demand and offers a relatively long service life, even when deep cycled. It outperforms flooded batteries in cold climates. But if you're able to get 7 years out of your flooded batteries, then stick with that. In my experience, my flooded batteries usually randomly die unexpectedly after roughly 4 years. So, I just proactively replace them every 4 years. I'm experimenting going a bit longer with my AGMs - I may not replace them until 6 years...will see.

On any BMW I've owned (4 in total) all with the battery in the trunk, none of them ever lost a battery before 7 years. I've had wet-cell batteries last over 10 years, even on my motorcycle (I've kept it on a maintainer). I'm not dissing the idea of an AGM, but I just don't see any advantage to paying more for one than a wet-cell for a normal street use vehicle.

The AGMs are the only ones that I've had that haven't ended up looking like this after a couple of years.
And that's with felt doughnuts and silicone grease.

Must be a different tie down in your Z4 than mine

I've never seen a battery in a BMW do that.

That's a random pic off Google. Have an AGM in the Z, and it doesn't look like that.
I have had many in my other cars and trucks heavily corrode like the pic.
Put an AGM in the Expedition, and a couple years later it's clean and shiny.
