Alcantara Steering Wheel
I had the opportunity to spend the day up at the Porsche Experience Center in Los Angeles a few weeks ago, and ended up driving the 718 Cayman S and 911 GTS. The Cayman had an alcantara steering wheel, and it was the first car I had driven with one. Loved the feel, but have always hesitated about alcantara since it's difficult to clean and wears more quickly than leather, plus the leather on my wheel was in excellent condition.
I came across another thread on here where a local did a steering wheel exchange through Royal Steering Wheels and was really happy with the result, and the pricing was very reasonable, so I pulled the trigger! The pricing really alleviated my concerns about the wear, because if it wears out quickly I'll just get another one, or move back to leather again in the future. Before After Very happy with the results! Here's a link to some other example Z4 wheels: http://royalsteeringwheels.com/bmw-z-series/ And a link which covers the material choices they offer: http://royalsteeringwheels.com/offer/ Cheers! -Rob

The sound isn't there (particularly in the Cayman) so that's a disappointment, however having driven prior Caymans I will say that the newer motor had significantly more torque, which was welcomed. The ability to slap a tune on the car and extract even more power and torque is awesome. From a pure driving perspective and ignoring the sound, they're better engines than what was in before without a doubt. Excited to see if the upcoming 718 GT4 has a 4.0L derivative though

The alcantara wrap looks gorgeous! A really nice modern touch to the cabin of the Z4. Is that the dark grey? How does it feel on the wheel? Like, is there any looseness or can you feel it shift place at all? And how long did it take end-to-end? Did you do an exchange or just send them your original wheel? This is a mod I'd really like to do myself, it looks great on your car.

These guys also do a great job, had mine done last year. You can't beat it for $250 and a definite upgrade

I have one alcantara steering wheel with blue stitching and blue 12 o'clock marker as well. Maybe I am going back OEM. If anyone is interested, send me a PM. Worldwide shipping is not a problem.

Not sure how to best answer your question -- it certainly wears more quickly than leather, and how quickly it will wear is dependent upon how well you take care of it. It can last for several years if you maintain it properly and don't drive the car with really dirty hands, etc.

Search YouTube on how to clean it with mild soapy water. You can also look for alcantara cleaner, I saw one on Walmart site. My alcantara steering is running good for the last 30k miles...I clean it once in 4-5-6 months. Check dirty and clean pics. Scratch with ur nail and if it makes white line it means it's dirty |
