The new Toyota Supra is a Z4MC

So - BMW launches the new Z4 convertible only. Then Toyota comes out with a new Supra that's the same engine, transmission, chassis, and interior -- but is a double bubble hardtop with a duck tail spoiler. You know what? The new Supra is a Z4M Coupe. And - I'm not the only one to notice. The comments section on this Jalopnik post are full of comparisons. Screenshotted below for ease of access.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. Its just weird to have the spiritual success to our car (for the coupe people) marketed by Toyota as a supra...

Not so sure about those tail lights.
Looks like the Prius Prime team had a hand in.

Yes, I agree. Of course this was expected with the arrangement between BMW and Toyota. What I don't know if there is a complete moratorium for either company on building the other style (e.g. a Z4 coupe, Supra roadster).

While I don't see myself trading in my Z4M coupe for it, I would love for BMW to at least produce another Z4M coupe on this platform...and, of course, offer it with a manual transmission!

Apparently there isn't:

I had the exact same reaction when I first saw that Supra article this morning.

Sounds like Toyota doesn't want to invest in a manual, so we'll have to rely on BMW to do the right thing.

Seems like a huge miss to not offer a manual for either the Z or the Supra.

Hah! Yes, a few years of seeing the Z4 coupe daily has made it's shape easily recognizable. That is my comment and my car, luckily I switched the wheels out last year - never liked how those Advan spokes poked out.

The driving dynamics between the Toyota and BMW are very different. While they ride on the same chassis and have the same powertrains, they are tuned very differently. Search for some of the YouTube videos from the past couple of days for the Supra. The suspension setup is quite different than the BMW and most reviewers like it better. It is smoother and has more adjustments to it from the cockpit.

My grandfather used to say "my next cat will be a dog" so in keeping with that, I guess my next Z4 will be a Supra.

Thought the exact same thing when I saw it! Growing up and being into turbo Toyota's, it's pretty coincidental that my next purchase maybe marrying both of my dream cars.

dre99gsx Toyota/BMW must have saw your build and agreed that you were on to something!

Well the Toyota 86 was already very close to the Z4MC (in the looks department) so I'm not surprised

You know, I've suddenly lost all interest in the new G29, after seeing these new Supra pictures/videos/reviews.

I posted the same thing months back after seeing some renderings of the Supra. Toyota took the best parts of the z4M coupe and ran with them-its much prettier than the BMW derivative!

I wonder if we'll be able to just pull off the Toyota badges and pop in Roundels...?

Ya know, after the comments that the E89 was bloated, heavy etc, I figured that the G29, with its return to a pure sports car intent, would have received a much more positive reception. And some of the initial road tests seem to suggest that BMW did well with the way the car handles. I guess we'll have to see what happens re the sales data when it hits showrooms.

In the meantime, I was washing the X5 yesterday after a glorious early fall afternoon, and a spin in the Z4, when the new neighbor across the street marched over. I'm done for now, I thought. Anyway, he proceeded to tell me how much he totally loved my E85 Z4 and thought it was an absolutely beautiful car. I was very surprised and appreciative of his remarks. But it makes me think - perhaps as E85 / E86 owners, we really got the best of the Z4 line. Don't sell 'em any time soon!

Wait, Toyota is not offering a manual option with the Supra (I have not been following this)?

Wow. Well, I guess the new Supra is NOT a Z4M coupe after all...
