Z4MC new clutch and flywheel - what to get?
Stock horsepower, stock intake, Z4MC. I may someday do the CSL intake stuff but that would be it. I'm replacing the clutch and flywheel. I'm a lifelong manual gearbox user and honestly very gentle on drivetrains in general. I drive hard but I don't hoon.
What should I use to replace the clutch and flywheel? LUK - has anyone gone with that brand? Pelican Parts and other sites tout it as "OEM quality" or somesuch, and the price is attractive. OEM - I would do this in a heartbeat if all I was replacing was the clutch stuff. The OEM flywheel price gives me pause however. Other DMF - I see some others out there such as Phoenix Friction, but I haven't found much in the way of customer ratings, particularly for DMF. Something else I'm missing...? "Stage 1" - I see no reason to do this and I really don't like what I read about solid flywheels on S54s. So I don't see myself going this way. Last edited by wdb; 03-10-2020 at 04:21 PM.. |

It sorta kinda gets pitched that way.
The more I think about it the more I think you are right. I still would like to hear more about the LUK brand though. |

Make sure you get the right part numbers though, I bought a set off one of the major vendors as a "Z4M package", had it installed, works OK, but loud af and has vibration issues at high RPM. Turns out, I got the wrong part numbers in the package. It was for Z3 version and had slightly different part number when compared to orig manufacturer website. Anyway.. be careful if you buy a package deal and check part numbers against the oe manufacturer.

I'll soon know -- should be delivered today. I'll be sure to check the part numbers!
EDIT: They're here. According to my best ability to double check the numbers, these are correct. Fit M3 and Z4 "3.2L" applications. And I found out just how much I overpaid by not ordering through Rock Auto. :-/ If anyone needs a LUK clutch kit they're on sale there right now! Last edited by wdb; 03-16-2020 at 03:49 PM.. |

The LUK clutch is a kit. It contains clutch disc, pressure plate, t/o bearing, input shaft bearing, alignment tool, and grease for the splines. So I guess I got a LUK t/o bearing.
In my past experience with clutch replacement I always got a lighter pedal. That may just be an artifact of old vs. new. My problem was low engagement, too near the floor for my liking. I'm hoping that gets fixed! |

Before that I had lots of issues with various parts bought from RA but managed to return those. It really looked like chances to get a faulty / broken / used part was about 50:50. Since then I stay away from this shop even though their prices are tempting.. For my bimmers I usually go with (in order of preference) FCPEuro, or Tischer, or ECS. |

My experiences using RockAuto have always been positive. Even their rebuild/core return policies get executed/credited without issue. Over the years, buying for many different makes from many different countries, no problems. There's always a 5% discount code to be found with a search (the code gets placed in their "how did you hear about us" block). The only caveat is to pay attention that your parts aren't shipping from multiple warehouses...otherwise shipping costs can be high.
On another note...I have always had good results using LUK clutch kits. |

Any body have links to exact fit for 2003 BMW z4 3.0 clutch conversion kit 6 speed? I'm mechanical inclined.... but there are far to many choices out there and I don't want any issues the day i have access to the lift for this.

I checked the bits I took off. Flywheel and pressure plate are stamped “LUK”. But...
...funny you should ask. The bearing that came with the LUK kit was faulty and Pelican Parts sent me another one. It was a Sachs. Identical to the original, unlike the LUK which had minor differences. |
