Modify throttle response on e85 2.5i
Folks -
I was hoping someone could point me to a good reference or source that discusses how to modify the MS45 DME using the standard bmwtools, e.g., WinKFP, Tool32, etc. I have those available and have successfully changed the settings in several of the control modules on my Z4 using NCS Expert. However, in NCS Expert, the ability to modify my car's DME is not an option (in so far as I've been able to determine thus far). I've tried searching at length on google and bmwc0d!ng and haven't found the help I need. I've read conflicting info that you can and the you can't modify the DME with the standard tools. Any help is appreciated. Regards, Tom Last edited by tomjonesBT33; 03-15-2020 at 12:09 PM.. |

I don't think you can do it with BMW Tools.
You'll need to use a hex editor + MS45 flasher, or Renovelo's ByteTuner. The other options are thousands of dollars. Check out ms4x.net

I have had a sprint booster for 4 years and honestly felt an increase in throttle response immediately.
The “race” setting takes a bit of getting used to mind you.

Thanks for the replies. I may have stumbled onto something, but need to spend some time reading and understanding. Will post a how-to if I'm successful.

It does not. That’s the avenue I’m pursuing. My ‘04 is pre-wired for the sport button. In addition to adding the button I know that I’ll need to add this option to my VO. I’ve also read that the EPS and DME also need to be “updated.” But I’m not sure what that means yet...

Success
Purchased the sport mode button from ECS tuning and received it earlier this week. Took my time taking the center console apart so that I didn’t break anything. Removing the knee pads was difficult. Even more difficult was trying to remove the Airbag indicator light. Couldn’t get the light to push out so ended up having to separate the switch (it snaps together).
Took my time drilling out the hole for the sport switch. Use various drill bits to get the bulk of the material out and then finished up with a dremel. Got the switch installed and the car back together last night. This morning I used NCS to update my car’s VO and enabled the sport switch option in the EPS. Started the car and the switch works! Took it for a short drive. Can definitely feel the difference in throttle response and steering weight. The shift points are obviously higher too (stays in the higher RPM range). Not sure that I like the shift points for normal driving, but for spirited driving it’s spot on. I like the steering and throttle response very much and would like to be able to keep these changes enabled in regular driving mode. May look into custom maps... All in all, I’m happy with the relative ease it took to add this feature to my car. Big thanks to the BMW enthusiast community for the various write-ups that make this type of mod possible for most owners to perform.

So after driving it a few days with the new sport button, I’ve decided that I really like the combination of sport mode with the semi-manual gearing mode. That way I get the throttle response and weighted steering and can control the shift points. It’s quite fun to drive.

It would be relatively easy to alter things so that the dme is always in sport mode or it defaults to on. It would be a little more difficult to implement a memory function for sport mode, though not impossible.
