How to install new header bolts?
Hey guys,
Putting an entire new exhaust on my Z4mc from the block to the back. Have CSL Euro headers, Euro mid pipe, and AFE full exhaust, all on hand. Have the entire exhaust already off the car. I ordered brand new hardware for the install as i figured it was smart to not reuse the original 10+ year old stuff. Ordered all OEM bolts etc from ECS. Where I am a bit stumped is how to remove and install the new header bolts. To be specific, these are the bolts that stick out of the block, 3 per exhuast port, 18 total (3x6). At the moment, some of the old bolts are still in, while some of the old bolts came out while removing the factory headers because the bolt and nut were strong enough to come out together basically. So i need to remove the old ones, which is no big deal, i can just use basically any wrench and thrash them and throw them away. But for reinstall i want to do it right and i dont know if there is a special tool? There is no allen wrench or torx type fitting on the tip. I can just thread them in by hand? Maybe loctite and threading by hand? Sorry for being long winded. Thanks for all advice in advance.

Put 2 nuts, tighten against other on the studs to remove or install the stud. They do make a stud installation tool, but I don't own one. I always use anti-seize on the threads of all exhaust hardware.

2nd vote for the two-nut method, completed this myself last spring. Borrow or invest in a torque wrench for the job - lots of different trq settings for exhaust bolts. Lots of people advise double checking after a few heat cycles as things can loosen up.

I do actually have a few pretty nice torque wrenches thankfully. Do you happen to know if the bolts that i'll tighten down with the 2x screw method have a torque spec? And when you did your install and torqued yours down did you reference any website to get those torque specs? Thanks again

I found all the instructions and specs necessary in these links http://www.billswebspace.com/BMWZ4MS...stallation.htm https://www.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=331906 Many folks here have done the install, do not hesitate to ask questions. It is fairly straight forward if you approach it without haste or distraction. |
