Clutch gone at 46,000KMS?
Hey all,
My '06 ZM4C has about 46,000kms on it. I took it out the other day and seemingly overnight the clutch feels like it might be gone. Clutch engagement now happens at the very top of the pedal travel (instead of about 1/3 from the bottom) and when it does engage there is very little bite, its too smooth, almost mushy. I'm not sure what the expected life for the clutch on this car is but this seems kinda early. My last Z4 (3.0SI) had over 100k and still no clutch issues, I had a mazda with 220k+ and never went through a clutch. I've never tracked this car and I like to think I know how to drive it properly. Any thoughts? Is there anything else that could cause this symptom without the clutch being worn out? Anyone in the GTA area know a good spot to price out a new clutch? I can't imagine it's cheap. Thanks for the help. |

Mine was tracked a fair bit, and still lasted to 200,000km - although that did require a full clutch & flywheel change.
Can't help with a local price as mine is a UK car (in the UK mine was about £1300). |

Did you check your fluid level?
I'd flush the clutch hydraulic system as one step in the diagnosis of the issue....after looking for leaks at connections.

And/or air in the system, which could happen with low fluid. If the fluid is low enough to introduce air in the system, I would sure track down the probable leak in the brake/clutch hydraulic system, because that's a safety issue. Brake fluid levels will drop a bit as pads wear, but it would be very unusual for the level to drop past the minimum point without a leak. Unless the fluid had only been filled to the minimum mark, we recently flushed, or new pads installed. Brakes are nice to have . |

In my experience BMW clutch hydraulics have limited life span of 5-6 years and/or 60k-100k miles. The older / more worn it is the more air starts getting into the slave / master cylinders. With our 10-13 year old cars I really doubt cylinders are still in good shape. On mine I definitely feel some weirdness - sometimes it feels like not disengaging completely but most of the time it's absolutely fine. But it's getting worse with time. So I'm planing on replacing both master and slave at the same time just as a preventative measure. On my previous (much younger) 3 serious the slave started to behave weirdly already at 65kmiles. Replacing it made shifts butter smooth again. |
