just called 911 for the first time

wow it was 12:40 AM, so like an hour ago and I called 911. I was in front of my computer, browsing through e90post and I start hearing some rattles in front of the door. I am like at first its the wind, then it keeps on going. I get my ass off the computer and look through the doors eyepiece and see a freaking dude trying to open our door!!

I run my ass off to my parents room dial 911. Im on with the operator and panicking my ass off. Talking as fast as I can. My dad gets up and goes to the window to see who it is. I am freaking out and thinking of an evacuation plan if i hear the door click open. My mom all this time is panicking the shit out. My dad tries to open the door and scare the dude off (i guess he noticed that he was a drunk or had no weapons). The dude starts leaving and I am relieved but scared he might be coming in from the back door. I finally see the cop lights and slowly open the door and say officer. At this point my legs are shaking uncontrollably. Multiple cop cars come and on the scene i see helicopters. Cops reassurance us saying they saw him and they tell their colleagues and surround the premise. The sergeant comes and his officers go on to try to find the guy. We start talking to the sergeant and he was a real cool guy, calmed us down and reassured us.

I wont go into too much details but basically ONE HUGE THUMBS UP!!!! FOR THE POLICE DEPARTMENT!! we tend to criticize them too much, but man they were very professional!!

If this were to happen to me, the first thing I'd do is grab a weapon of some sort, be it a knife, bat, etc.

Leaving yourself vulnerable in the corner of a room is not a smart idea.

Good thing that the 5-0 came on time. I called 911 once when I saw a fire being started on a highway and was put on hold for 10+ mins.

You would be surprised how often this happens with drunk people. Although I see it more often at apartments where they all look alike. Glad to hear you received good service.

You guys really do not know how good you have it. Coming from South Africa, things like this happens daily to people I know. From December last year until now, a family friend of ours got shot outside of his house in our neighborhood. They took only his cellphone. Ive had an attempted hi jacking. And 3 houses had armed robberies in our street. Only naming a few in the last six months. And this is all in a 6km radius from my house. And it is considered one of the 'safer' areas.
But yes, you are very lucky, things turn ugly very quickly. Good to hear the police were doing their duty.

I'm glad everything turned out ok, but man, you reacted poorly.

I'm not saying you're supposed to turn into He-Man, whip out your Power Sword, and charge out through the front door in defense of life and property, but don't just cower in your parents' room. Man up, grab a bat, a golf club, whatever you can find, and prepare to defend yourself in case the police don't show up in time, or the guy gets in, or whatever else might happen.

That said, again, I'm glad you and your family are safe.

A lot of people give cops a hard time (especially traffic cops). But we should all be grateful for their presence and service. In the end, cops make a huge difference. I personally couldn't imagine living in a society where there was no police presence.
