E86 Rear hatch struts - FYI only

The pair on my '08 were shot, started looking for the OEM part 51243420572 and they are mostly $70+ each. So I decided to use after-market and ended up with the Sachs STABILUS SG202016 and paid $29 each. Just FYI, it seems like this model is becoming harder to locate, not sure why.

Had these fitted and the extended/retracted lengths were spot on.

OTOH, the shorter ones for the E85's seem to be readily available from multiple manufacturers.

Saw those as well but I needed the replacement sooner than the quoted delivery since it didn't show Prime. That's within a couple of dollars and no more hitting the head.

That's a much better price and what I expected to pay at first for these struts, saw that in my search but didn't go through because the shipping took a little longer than I prefer, plus they showed 2 in stock. There was another place that showed 2 in stock and ended up cancelling my order, not sure if they actually had 2 or that was simply a placeholder.

At any rate, these are made in the U.S. so hopefully I don't have to think about replacement for several years.

So mine just seemed to go from bad to worse overnight I feel. Just placed the order for a new pair of struts to prevent any more concussions from occurring. I assume these are pretty easy to put in? From what I have seen, I don't see what nut I have to loosen on the part where it attaches to the hatch.

Is there a step by step guide by chance somewhere?

Different car, but the the same principle. Just make sure you have something or someone holding the hatch up when you remove the old struts!

Just just got my replacement struts from RockAuto.com today and it was really quick and easy to replace them after watching the video. If the clip flies off when prying it loose, no worries as you don't need them. The new struts come with their own.
