beisan diy feedback

Can anyone here give some feedback as to how hard the beisan system "upgrade" was as a diy project? ? I am considering taking this on. I saw some posts regarding it and there is a lot of great info as to how, but not si much detail as to each individuals mechanical background and time it took.

Thanks in advance guy!

I just did my M54 2.5i last weekend. I did the Dr Vanos replacement not the Beisan rebuild however. I didn't consider it an upgrade but necessary maintenance at 178000 miles on the original vanos. I felt immediate positive results. Highly recommend this be done.

I am weekend hobby mechanic on my own autos and farm equipment with no formal training but a lifetime of mechanical tinkering. With proper preparation, research, tools, and attention to the details it is an extremely easy, quick and enjoyable job to complete in less than one afternoon. If you can replace a starter or alternator you can do this.

I was nervous also after reading posts about others experiences and looking at the clearance between the pump and that metal bulkhead. I went to 1 indy shop and the BMW dealer for estimates. BMW quoted me $2000 and told me they had never had to replace one and didn't understand why I wanted it done and wouldn't use my supplied pump. The indy euro specialist was $1000 labor and would use my supplied parts.

I found most helpful the diy's from Beisan, Dr Vanos, and this forum.

Things not in the diy's I did that made it easier for me.
1. Remove plastic undertray.
2. Remove the 2 bolts that secure the airfilter box allowing it to rise.
3. Remove the 3 torx bolts securing the air pump and remove it.
4. Remove front nut securing the left strut tower brace and loosen the rear nut and pivot the brace away from the motor.
5. Remove the plastic cover over the radiator.
6. Disconnect both radiator hoses from the thermostat housing.
7. Remove both top motor mount nuts.
8. Use a 2x6 on top of a 4x4 on top of a jack to raise the motor up until the lowest nut securing the vanos is exposed.

Hope this helps. I can add more if you need. Good luck.

The Dr Vanos came complete with a rebuilt pump, 2 o-rings for the plastic caps, 1 metal gasket, and 2 oil line washers. I received my pump within a day or two of order. It took me over 60 days to get around to doing the install and return my core. My core deposit was refunded to my paypal account within 2 days of me shipping it back via Dr Vanos provided UPS return label. I did get a $4 dollar charge for over 60 day core return. No hassels,no problems, didn'teven have to talk or communicate with anyone. I wish they offered more so I could do more business with them.

Hope this helps.

The hardest part may be getting the Vanos out of the ///M.
There are dozens of DIYs on the M3, but none on the Z4.
I've been plotting and scheming on this for about a year.
I've bought or made every possible tool; air line connector, switch box, M6x60 bolts, etc.
I'm waiting for someone else in the forum to do it first
