OEM Navigation Stereo. What is this thing?

We're all familiar with the Business CD (non-nav) and the CID Control CD (navigation) stereos for the E85 and E86. But there's a third Z4 stereo shown on Real OEM that I've never seen in real life. It appears to be a stereo with a small navigation display built into it.

Anyone know what this is, exactly?

That's it alright! Looks like this head unit only works with the flip up navigation screen?

There's yet another stereo for the Japanese market that plays MD instead of CD:

Does the Business Navi somehow show turn-by-turn directions on that little screen?

Edit: Sure does. Crazy.

Yes it has in a slightly different case/front.
The e46 also has its own equivalent, in a front with a music cassette slot.
Its I think originally developed by philips/vdo

I have this in my MR. Bought years ago from eBay Germany when I was retrofitting nav into my old Z. Interestingly enough I have never seen directions displayed on it, but a bunch of other info.

Edit: Here's a pic of it in my car
