Thumbs down Schmiedmann CF Mstash Lip - snapped in half

I wanted to share this with you guys
I bought this CF lip on black friday for $300 what I thought was a pretty good deal. I installed the lip last week after taking the whole bumper apart and installing a 4 tab system under my bumper connecting it to the lip with a series of pop on tabs. Looked great!

So i used the lip for that week after install until the weekend when I went to a car meet in Kendall Florida. Well normal driving around Kendall at stock height with stop suspension was difficult with the roads. Coming in and out of venues with scraping seemed OK but the lip did develop a crack under it withing the first 2 scrapes. No big deal

The real issue came when I was pulling into my friends apartment complex as I usually do where there was an exposed drain.

Took the drain quite slowly but unfortunately the lip did not survive. Snapped like a kit kat bar and leaving pieces inside the drain. 1 week and for $300 bucks, not such a great deal.

Also I did contact Schmiedmann to see if they could do anything for me since I got to drive the car with it for a few days and had literally just received the part. As expected they can't do anything for me so this is where I'm at...

Better luck next time I guess

Better to have the lip snap in half than taking your bumper with it. (the lip is made of thin fiberglass (or some similar product), the carbon is just either a dip or very thin 1 layer for show)

Clearly either your car was too low or the drain was too deep.
Regardless of what the lip is made of, that drain is always going to win.

BTW I bought this lip too on black friday. Havent fitted it yet though.

Getting the lip repaired and redipped is probably just as expensive as getting a new lip.

Yeah, it was probably a good thing I used tabs and not screws, bumper took minimal damage

Ouch. I bought this exact same lip for $400 because it wasn't a black Friday deal. This was years ago. The car looked SICK on the road. It lasted me 3 weeks when it broke also on the driver's side fang. I hit a dip that didn't see until the last minute. I drove it like that for a week, car looked horrible. After that one week, I hit a small bump driving into Discount Tire for new shoes. Went in at an angle, but my lip snapped in half right in the middle like yours. I took it to some guy locally, charged me $100 to repair it. He fixed it up with fiberglass right in the middle and painted the middle section black. He glued the driver's fang and painted the small crack in black, couldn't even see it. The lip lasted me about another 2 months before it snapped and broke again in the middle, leaving it unrepairable (only because one piece flew off in the freeway).

The piece is TRUE carbon fiber. It's not dipped as Guidok pointed out and it seems to be more than 1 layer of carbon fiber, you can see it on both inside and out. I'm sure it does have fiberglass composites of course.

I'm going to purchase the Schmiedmann lip again but i may also purchase the carbon fiber APR lip so i can put it at the bottom and it MIGHT protect the upper Schemiedmann lip.

Then you maybe have another model. And I'm not saying its dipped, but that its either dipped or coated with a very thin CF layer (1 ply)
The current schmiedmann one looks like this on the inside:

Thats not CF but some very coarse (glass?) fibres. So the main structure of the thing is clearly some glassfibre or something and there isnt any CF that gives significant strenght to the structure.

Also on that broken one you also immediately see the white glassfibres.

Maybe I should strenghten it from the inside as a precautionairy measure. It does reduce the ground learance considerably...

Perhaps I do, I'm not sure. Mine looked a little different from the inside. I threw it away when I removed it so I can't take a pic now. Here's pics of mine when it broke. Disregard the snapchat comments lol.

Wow, everyone who has bought this "cosmetic" Splitter, should return and ask for their money back.

Poorly made
Design sucks
Overpriced junk

Jordan a realistically priced FG hood with aesthetically pleasing and functional venting would be well recieved methinks.
Not necessarily CF as most will paint to match body I would think.

Any plans for this?

Isn’t the Z4M good already fiberglass? It’s light as a feather.
Great idea though Dave. +1 on the functional venting

ZeD4MR, yours will probably be the answer.

How does the Mstache v2 hold up? I think this carbon piece was a copy of the v1 design.

I also have this in my garage right now. Its definitely fiberglass with a carbon coat. The fiberglass is very rigid. The piece itself needs to be flexed just to put it on. It does not just slide up easily. You have to come up with your own method of mounting. After playing around with it for a while, I decided to hold off for a bit. With the amount of torque needed to put this piece in place to look right, its a just a slight tap away from shatter at any point. Its also very tall, moreso than I would have wanted. With a lowered car, its toast.

I dont have any experience viewing the Mstache v2, so I dont know if its the same height as this carbon piece.

Really, and I hope ZeD4MR comes through , it needs to needs to be 1/2 as tall as this piece is to have any chance to survive. Also, flexible

I think this is key. The fangs are already low, and extending it foreward and lowering it by 3/4 of an inch or so (quickly guestimated)....

But what other carbon splitters are there, that arent ridiculously looking (you know the insane extended rice ones like APR)?

I wish we had a lip similar to the design one on the 135i where it uses the fangs to hold it and simply levels the front bumper area like this

My M has KW V3 and is fairly low. I've used 3 Schmiedmann splitters and am on my 1st Mstache v2.

previous deaths due BIG road bumps, Groundhog, Porcupine.

Live fast and LOW and replace spoiler often.

It's like fuel: the more you burn the more fun you have.

jus sayin

Saintex, is there a difference between the Schmiedmann and Mstache v2 on height? Any other feedback would be appreciated

I’m about to order another Schmiedmann lip because now the car looks unfinished with the Skyer side skirts. I just hope this one lasts way over a month this time. Any update on that Mstache V2 saintex, still on the car?
