Have you tried removing the shifter trim and foam so you can get a better head and isolate the noise?

I removed the shifter trim and everything was louder but still coming from the same direction (straight down, as per Ryan's comment).

I'm pretty sure mine doesn't whine when I come off the throttle but will check tomorrow.

Confirmed: in my car the whine in gear only happens with throttle applied.

3002 tii - I think you indicated this could mean it is diff related?

Yep I would think that’s a function of the diff, maybe it’s time for a fluid change.

If it is diff related, would just changing the shifter make that much difference to the sound?

I actually had my diff fluid changed around 2,000km ago. Having said that, the reason I had the fluid changed is because I get a resonance with the throttle closed between 100 and 120km/hr. I started a thread about that but can’t find it now.

Any chance the two symptoms are related?

I got my RTD out and put the autosolutions in and the tranny sound I was getting is now gone. The AS ssk is also a great time

A bit of an update:

After not driving the car for a couple of weeks, I took it out about three weeks ago and the noises were much reduced. Still present but only audible with the radio and fan off and the windows up. Maybe even tolerable as-is.

Talking to my service shop and Ronald from Autosolutions, it seems that it took a little while for the trans fluid friction modifier to fully work through the transmission.

I’d still like to reduce the noises a bit more but that will depend on how much it will cost for Ronald to make some less stiff mounts.

I'm a little late to the party here but I am in the midst of a clutch replacement and AS SSK install.

The AS kit I received came with two different sets of bushings for attaching the front of the shift arm to the gearbox casing. There was a pair of BMW factory rubber bushes, and another AS-custom set of delrin (I think!) bushings with a bronze sleeve. If the AS-custom stuff was used in your install I would expect that a good bit more gear noise would be transmitted into the shift arm, and the shift lever as well, especially because the AS lever is a metal-to-metal connection to the shift arm. In short you traded rubber and plastic for bronze and metal, and you are going to have more sound transmitted through those parts.

tl;dr: My bet is you're hearing gear whine, pretty much what you'd hear if you put a stethoscope against the gearbox while it was under load.

Those two bushings (part 2 in the realOEM diagram below) seem to be the culprit. Ronald is going to provide a quote for making these with a softer compound. Of course, installation will be expensive since I won’t be doing it myself.

I’d be interested in hearing how yours sounds after installation. It still seems a bit strange to me that no one else (at least no one that has read this thread) has experienced the same thing.

Yep, part #2 and also #7. The AS rig does away with the plastic socket housing the shift lever ball. It’s quite elegant. But a little noisier.

Is this what you guys are talking about? If so it seems like they didn't use them when installing my AS ssk. Maybe that's why I have no tranny whine noise?

They're OEM parts. My kit came with those and the AS "ultra" replacement pieces. Since you have those in your hand, let's assume they put the ultras in your car.

My knob vibrates only in 6th gear when on throttle now but I'm just assuming it's no big deal and ignoring it lol
