I'd think it'd to be true as i4's are currently coming in with 8.5. However since the M design is different, can't tell for sure.

Careful what you wish for though. I drive 8.5 isn’t all that great, in some ways it’s a step backwards!

Please share your perspective - I think there were issues with 8.5 at the initial launch, but the software updates seems to have fixed them.

It is quite frustrating that it is hard to know what HW versions are in each of the products - how can we tell which HW version is in production now?

True enough. What would you like to see in G82 that G20 will get in July? M4 is already luxurious enough. Glass knobs would be cool though.

That's for M3. M4 gets a refresh in March of 2024. Non-laser headlights, different taillights, and iDrive 8.5 as it seems. To be honest, I can't find any difference in the shape of the headlights, but the taillights do look different.

I love 8.5 personally. Haven't found any faults with it.

I was under the impression that when BMW partnered with Toyota to share the assembly line at the Magna Steyr plant where they produce the Z4 and the Supra the deal was that BMW would make the ragtop and Toyota would make the hardtop and therefore they would avoid competing against each other.

Do they use lower grade steel, aluminum, and other materials to justify the lower price (vernasca vs. merino leather)? Or is it because assembly in Mexico is so much cheaper? Or is it because M2 is 21cm shorter?
I test drove both and they both are amazing. Is it possible that in 10 years M4 will be in a much better condition than M2 if driven in the same fashion?
Wrong place to ask this question.

Any inside word on the manual used in the M2/M3/M4 getting re-worked like the one in the forthcoming Z4 did? Hopefully they will keep the manual option AND make it better in the future/LCI. I was leaning towards the automatic based on several reviews that reported the manual in the M2/3/4 was not up to the level of the rest of the drivetrain. I've only driven the automatic so far.

This is an interesting quote from Motor Trend:
“The shifter itself is a big step up from the same mechanical ZF unit found in the Toyota Supra. Indeed, BMW says the Z4 manual’s shift linkage is physically different than the Supra’s, and it sure feels that way. The shifts are crisper, more mechanical, less rubbery, more satisfying. You know what else? The Z4's transmission feels better than the M2's six-speed. Same for the row-your-own M3. Along with the other changes BMW implemented, the sporty factor has increased noticeably. As athletic as a Porsche Boxster? No, but name a competitor’s car that is. The 2024 BMW Z4 is in a much better place performance-wise than it was. That’s a good thing.”

I would hope you'd be right in that BMW would adopt the re-worked manual transmission from the 2024 Z4 into the 2025 M2/M3/M4. However we all know that would entail significant engineering/testing (not to mention cost) that BMW would likely NOT want to do.

I would guess the current 6MT (same shifter/bushings, etc) that we have in the M2/M3/M4 will transfer verbatim into the 2025 models. Too bad they couldn't have done this manual trans engineering work BEFORE the G80/G82/G87 came to market.

Why should they be different? They just moved the whole production and did not design new engines.

You are probably right, but if the Z4 got one for its LCI, I'm hopeful they will see that success (fingers crossed the manual Z4 sells better) and take a harder look at their other manuals. Feel like BMW has been "mailing them in" reluctantly and it took Toyota (of all companies) to get their attention! My son's 30K Honda Civic Si has a better stick than most BMWs and it shouldn't be that way.

What year is his Civic Si? I had a 2000 Acura Integra which is the same as Civic Si for over a decade. I was also considering a BMW 323, but ended up with the Integra because it was more affordable at the time. 323 had a more refined manual transmission. After that decade, I got an Infiniti G37 with manual, which I chose over 335 AWD with manual, also because of affordability, but they had pretty similar stick feeling. I drove the new Integra with manual and the new M2, 3, and 4 6MT. No comparison. M wins.
