Yeah I don't see a problem as long as the kid is mature and responsible. Knowing me, I would've been fine even with a Ferrari @ 16 years of age. It really just depends on how the kid was brought up, what virtues they have, if they're disciplined, etc.
I trust that OP knows his daughter well enough to make a judgment call on whether or not it's a good idea to give such a nice first car.

Congratulations on a great find and a beautiful car. Nothing wrong with the auto. Sounds like some good small mods to start with, and feel free to ask questions. And you've got the "one passenger" rule more than covered with this car!

BTW, I'm now viewing this is a legitimate thread based on the last post The original post--well, it was a bit hard to believe with the car pictures taken directly off the dealer site and so on. It's pretty clear now this if for real, so welcome aboard!

I'm going to be slightly preachy now and recommend a BMWCCA Car Control Clinic or a Street Survival Course (Tire Rack, forum sponsor, does these). Both are great!

The handling characteristics of this car can be a tricky mix for an inexperienced driver. Add in power, as this car has, and it's more tricky. It was a tricky mix for me and my wife until we learned better car control skills too--and that's with 30 years of driving behind us both. It's great car, but it demands a lot from its driver.

I talked to a 16 year a couple weeks back at a local car meet up who had just completed the Street Survival Course: skid pad, wheels on/off track in dirt, recovery, spins, emergency avoidance, emergency braking, etc. (He has a late 70s 911 which his dad bought him to match dad's 911.) "Wow" was how he put it. "I'm so glad I took that course, and I'm going to try to get all my friends to take it too."

My wife and I took the BMWCCA course and I cannot put a value on it. It probably saved my wife's life. Two day after the clinic she had put her new found skills to use to drive her way out of an accident. She said w/o the skills/habits she learned there would have been no way she could have avoided the accident.

Your daughter is a lucky girl to have a car like this. It sure beats the that beetle any day. Oh, good luck staying out of the car and not asking to borrow the keys from her.

The main problem I see is that these cars have terrible visibility!! Most of us can deal with it because we have been driving for a long time. I would hesitate to allow a beginner to drive an E86 simply because of the visibility issues.

When I was 17 my Dad bought a '67 Dodge Dart with 3 on the tree for my Mom and me to use. Cost him $800. I did the majority of driving and put 70k miles on it before I graduated HS. I loved that car even though it had a 0-60 time measured in minutes. That alone kept me out of a lot of trouble.

I was in my mid-30's before I bought my first new vehicle and it was a Chevy pickup.

I can't say I would have turned down a sports car when I was a kid. No kid would. But having a slow, simple car gave me time to learn how to drive without killing myself, especially in those days when seatbelts were something you stuffed down behind the seat.

$370/6 mo. In a Z4 with a learner's permit? Wow!

Unfortunately, my prediction: new driver + lightweight car + high hp = my coupes gonna get a bit rarer in the next couple years.

Sorry of that offends anyone... but the handling characteristics of this vehicle, combined with the reduced visibility and the distractible nature of the teenage driver makes it a unwise choice for a first car.

I was an extremely responsible teenager. If Doctor Who and his Tardis or Doc Brown in the Delorean were to appear in my driveway accompanied by my 16 year old self, I WOULD NOT let younger me drive my Z4!

However, if you are convinced that your kid can be trusted with this car, then please take heed of the great advice provoded by the folks above. I would also see if a dealer can disable Sport mode for you, and do something to prevent the Dynamic Traction Control and Dynamic Stability Control systems from being turned off.

Good luck, and I wish your daughter a lifetime of safe driving!

I got a 9 year old e39 528 for my first car, which was enough car for me (luckily the e39 was much slower and more forgiving than the mc, otherwise i might not be here now lol). my brother got a very clean 06 e46 325 coupe for his first car though, fully loaded etc, and has been very responsible. he doesnt have the same kind of enthusiasm about driving i guess lol

Whether it's too "fast" for a kid is beside the point. Even if I had the money, and the kid was mature, I wouldn't spoil my child with a car like this. Kids need to learn work ethic. Work hard, earn nice things. That's how I was brought up. I started working at 15 and my first car was a Geo Metro. You're setting her up for disappointment later in life, unless your trust fund is big enough to carry her. Just my opinion of course.

My dad had a three year old Z06 when I was 16 and he let me race it at driving events. I learned great car control but was a very responsible teen. It definitely depends on the person. He wouldn't let my brothers drive the car. The BMW street survival class would be great for your daughter.
I did buy my first car and had a great appreciation for it. Looks like a fun car for your daughter.

Ehh, it's not your kid. The guy didn't post soliciting parental advice. Truth is you see threads like this every week on Bimmerpost. Do I agree with OP's purchase decision? No but what does it matter...

By posting on a forum, you're agreeing to criticism. And you're right, it doesn't matter.

WHS +1. Truthfully, i have no idea the point of the OP. I still think he is a troll and coming here to make fun of the forum community ( such as Z cars are for Teenager girls?
The only thing i am a little disappointed is the car not an M (if it is true) cause my ZMC will be even RARER in less than a year

You hit the nail on the head here. I agree with you 100%. Its todays parents that have gotten soft. Thats a fact.

I am not going to go on because I can site so many facts/issues why a young kid should learn the value of money AND work ethic.

I beg to differ though on the matter of parents being "soft."
Because I feel as if my parents' allowing me to start out with a nice car actually in turn taught me about appreciating and treasuring things in life. And that in turn also led to teaching me about the value of money and hard work (i.e. if one does not work hard, one cannot drive a BMW ). So I still think it depends on the kid. And none of us can judge whether or not OP's child is deserving of such a gift; only the OP has that right.
And yes, you guys are correct; that even if we did have the right to judge, it wouldn't matter, since the child is not ours

But all in all, to each his/her own. Same thing applies to everything. Everyone has a different way of doing things.

Don't you still live at home? It's kind of like Romney saying he "only" made $375K last year.

So basically the only people saying this is ok are people who come from well-off families

A place where I reside is called "home", yes lol. You don't live in a home?
I don't see any issues here. What are you so uptight about exactly? Why the hostility bro?

I'm from a middle class household and I have to say that although I've had a lot of help from my parents financially, I never took it for granted. I honestly wouldn't buy my first child a nice car either, but that doesn't mean I'm going to make them slave over a shitty job to only end up getting a Geo Metro when they know dad has the means of buying something nicer and SAFER. Unless your kid is a complete let down and can't meet any of your expectations as a child, then I would concur that they only deserve what they have thus showed for. Good grades, respect, loving, helpful, regard for human life, and understanding the world around them. The things I just listed are a few to name that I would reward my child for accomplishing.

EDIT:

This could also be a cultural thing.
