Hailed out panels

If anyone does want to buy this and try to restore it, please let me know as I'm nearly 100% sure that my M Coupe is about to become a full outlaw (vs. just a hatchback convert) so to start with dinged panels would be fine by me and I'll trade straight ones for the project for them plus cash to help fund my build.

Likewise if there's someone out there looking for a complete car minus the work to fix this one, I'd be happy to take on the resto project.

My M Coupe was hail damaged before I bought it. These cars can be completely reskinned without welding. Every exterior panel either bolts or glues on.

I'm more tempted by the thought of making racecar...

Its very hard to see how extensive the hail damage is from the pictures. This one is intriguing - possibility of getting a nice car for cheap maybe?

Seriously debating on bidding on this to use as a future track car (and first Z4MC).

On another note, if you zoom in on the picture, there's a ZPost decal on the passenger side rear window. Would love to hear the PO chime in, feel free to PM me if you see this, and don't want to make yourself known!

No, this car has 108,522 miles and a clear title, not a salvage title.

Becareful with Copart....the cars are there for a reason. I would go and have this inspected before bidding.

Car being "totaled" = salvage title. I expect that will be the case here, else Copart would not have it.

You can hire a guy to inspect a car for you? Are they allowed to drive it around or get underneath it?

It's not hard to fathom totaling a car that you can't get a new roof for without custom fab/ refab work.

Edit:

...or maybe they are available. What about the hatch lid and glass? That's no common stamp.

Check the photos. Other than a cracked windshield, glass appeared to be intact. Hail damage wasn't really apparent (at least not on my little phone screen).

Besides, would be a good excuse to install a CF roof.

We had a huge hailstorm come through a few years ago. Ran right over 'dealership row' in a nearby city. Almost every car on their lots was totaled, including the Mercedes dealer lot.

I had a Honda Fit sitting on one of those lots after getting its 100K mile service. The insurance adjuster didn't even get halfway around the car before stopping; he had hit the breakover point already. Cheaper car, same miles though.

If there are any hail dings on the A pillars or C pillars of a car they can total it because "technically" PDR guys can't PDR on structural panels. You just gotta get someone to do it on the side if you purchase.

PITA to insure salvaged cars? Never really seriously looked into it.

Wow. Soooooo much misinformation.

1) Yes, the car totaled by an insurance company is at Copart...their business model is selling cars totaled by insurance companies. They also sell dealer cars, Donations cars, retired rental cars, fleet vehicles etc.

2) Hail damage does not mean an automatic salvage title. In fact, here where I live, the state will not allow hail damaged cars to be titled salvage, clear titles are required. Every state has their own titling laws, and some states don't even have titles and sell cars on Bill of Sales, if a certain age.

3) Cars can be inspected a couple days prior to auction. They cannot be driven. They usually can be started if you want.

4) It's easy for a car to be totaled due to hail. A complete professional re-spray could cost $4-8K. Then add hood/roof replacement (auto-body shops don't repair damage much anymore, preferring to replace panels) , possible rental expense, etc. ALSO...since hail cars bring so much more money at auction than crashed cars, insurance companies might have a lower threshold for totaling them; 60% instead of 75%, for example.

5) Cars are not totaled due to hail dings on pillars. While considered a "structural" part, so are frame rails, inner structure, cowls, roofs, rocker panels, floors, quarter panels... These parts are properly repaired all day every day. Manufacturers have published guidelines for proper repair as well.

6) AutoCheck/Carfax might show one thing now, but once the auction sale is completed, it will likely be updated to show that this car's been declared a total by an insurance company.

7) Insuring this car should not be an issue. If it had a salvage title, or if you want to insured with a specialty company, then you might have issues (financing a salvage title car might be tricky as well). Caveat emptor.

I'm not trying to be a jerk to other posters, but, incase you haven't figured it out, I'm a bit of an expert in this area, having personally overseen the sale of 120,000+ total losses over the last 12+ years. Just want to help the community by dropping some knowledge, not opinion, fake news or dark-web conspiracy rumors.

This car would be an excellent buy, IMHO, and will likely sell for $.45 on the dollar. Although... get a couple buyers battling for it, and could bring 60% or more of actual cash value. That's how auctions do.

Also, anyone bidding be aware of buyer's fees, they could be substantial if this car brings all the money.

WHEW! Off my soapbox now, back to work...
