This is a simple mod that nets results without issues. You're not going to melt mounts and other such bs if your sticking with Euro headers.

Our cars came from the FACTORY in Europe this way, and all ur doing is mimicking it. Easy.
+1 I just got mine on Saturday and so far no CEL or any problems, just waiting on my tune to get the full potential out of the mod.

I did get all new gaskets and fittings to avoid problems. Pictures on my mod thread under my sig.

WOW
and the pair of us were literally trying to figure this out!
No kidding. Finicky little bastard had us pulling out our hair.
I had some choice words for the shop because they had it apart TWICE and the problem persisted.
FWIW, I've got a tidy $ credit there now. Lol

I've been running a year now with the Euro headers and relocated 02 sensors behind the secondary cats with no CEL. Car still runs great. I have the ESS tune too but that did not fix the CEL I got initially when the shop I used cut and extended my O2 sensors. Since replacing them the car runs perfectly with the CEL. The same shop also put my 02 sensors in the wrong postion, which I was assured by many people would kill the 02 sensors in short order due to condensation but they are still working well a year later!

Good long-standing thread here - any long term updates from the people who have done this mod? Any modifications to the procedure worth noting before going ahead with the job?

I've got the euro headers sitting at home, need some encouragement to get into this project and get them installed. I've eluded to this question in other threads, any opinions on putting resonators in the forward part of section 1, keeping the rest of this job exactly the same?

I'm operating under the current assumptions: Cats effectively increase down stream EGT because of the catalytic process (ie, EGT upstream of a cat is actually lower than EGT exiting the cat - correct?) therefore removing the primary cats by swapping to euro headers will reduce EGT to some degree. I assume that resonators would act more like a heat-sink, further reducing EGT, but I could be wrong. If they do, it's possible that the EGT getting to the relocated EGT sensor and secondary cats/o2 sensors could be altered enough to cause a problem - all hypothetical of course.

So, one thought: if coating the headers may help to maintain a higher EGT than with uncoated headers this might offset any kind of "heat-sink" function the resonators might have if placed ahead of the cats and **might** help to prevent any kind of problem with resonators ahead of the cats. I was planning on coating the headers anyway. Overall, comparing the effects of cats in the OE headers vs. the effects of resonators ahead of the secondary cats, I don't see much global difference...but opinions welcome! Maybe I'm over analyzing all of this too much.... I think resonators in front of the section 1 cats would be ok, my gut tells me if removing primary cats and relocating sensors works out like it has for many people, sticking some resonators in there should be ok, I guess I'm just looking for other opinions.

I will soon be providing some info to this thread. I've just been so busy with the new house, I haven't been able to do what I want with my car.

I purchased SS v2 Headers a while back. Got them JetHotted and Had a shop install some o2 J bungs in my Section 1. I have them currently plugged. My car is in need of a valve adjustment and I actually have the shim kit arriving at my house today. My plan is to:

-adjust valves
-drive it for a week
-change oil
-get a baseline dyno (3 pulls)
-throw on my SS v2 headers and relocate o2 to bungs already installed
-drive it for 300-400 miles to allow it to adapt
-get post header dyno (3 pulls)
-write thread and share info with the community

I hope to have this finished in the next month or so. I've had these headers for almost a year!

ESS will only support a tune for a car that ISN'T throwing a CEL due to an incorrectly installed / damaged EGT/O2 sensor. The plumbing is not their issue or responsibility.

Our cars run just fine with EURO headers and NO tune - without any CEL's or thrown codes if it's done right. Lots of extra power and all that good stuff.
The tune is there to extract more from your mods and tie everything in nicely.
If anyone is relying on the tune to get around a correct install, then look forward to some stresses.

I know I asked this in another thread but

Am I allowed to quote myself? Or do only crazy people do that?

I will update both threads when I learn the answer for completeness!

After 8 pages and 162 posts, I don't have an answer.

Did Rob's car pass California smog by the end of last year???

I didn't need smog last year when my renewal arrived. it'll probably be end of this year. I saw somewhere CA smog will not require tailpipe sniffer. They will only check through OBD II for data.

Thanks Rob and OG. I heard the same thing, but I will have to see it to believe it. They might change their mind.

I would locate the egt next to the cats like in the euro section. The egt picks up the heat that the cats capture causing different levels of heat than just the bare pipe near the headers. Some have had issues with this, but it would seem to me that the stock euro location to match the catless headers is probably the best way to go.

The exhaust heats up the cats not the other way around...

Where is the EGT on the US headers pre or post header cats? If it is before there is no reason to move it and I believe that would be the case. If after that would be an odd way of doing things not horrible, just moving it a little further from downstream would suffice.

When I get headers the only restriction I will have in my exhaust is one single muffler (3" front&center mounted aeroturbine, resonated) as the rest is straight pipe currently. I will have to figure out what to do with the 2nd o2's wish ESS and others just tuned them out.

If you have not seen an aeroturbine muffler you should google them, there is no packing or anything and they are straight through. They reduce exhaust noise with an "air foil" originally designed to muffle jet engines!!! Ask to see one next time you are at an exhaust place...

Right before the cats in the headers. Number 5 in this diagram.
