I've done a few road trips with the 3.91 and have no complaints, but lots of E46 M3 owners I've talked to feel the same way about the 4.10. Use the charts Burt posted to get a feel for what rpms you'd typically be running, and experiment with holding your car at those rpm levels now to see how you feel about the noise levels. That should help you decide.
