Z Garage reno - Update #2

Updates;
1. >>> jump Post 32
2. >>>Jump Post 101

....................
Over the years most of you have seen pics of my garage.
It has a lot of function with the lift etc., but pretty it isn't.

Additionally, a big issue for me is that it's not heated.
I have all that time when the car is stored in there for winter, but its just too dang cold to work out there.
Fixing up the garage has looooong been on my wish list.

So now that I'm no longer tied to a 9to5 I decided to git'er dun.
I got things rolling before Christmas.
The biggest challenge was to get some heat in there quickly before it really got cold.

1st thing was a 40K BTU gas fired unit heater.

.
and some material to start framing and insulating.

.
The garage was completely open across all three bays (28' x 44').
The first thing to frame up was a demising wall to separate the Z workshop.

.
Had to work carefully with the car still in the bay until I could free up materials from the other 2 bays.

.
Framing done & wall board started (non-heated side)
Now able to get the car out of the Z bay.

.
With demising wall up and drywalled on the outside, time to get the unit heater in so I can get some heat going.
Did just enough ceiling board to get it in and fired up.

Insulation complete and interior wall board up.
Electrical roughed in for lighting & door opener.
Starting to feel like a proper workshop.

.
alcove is for tool box, overhead storage and a computer desk.
Keeps the floor space clear.
A/V outlet roughed in above work bench.

mudding half way done.
cornice not done as it will be finished with a trim piece.

...that's it for now, will update as it moves along

.

Looks great - you are making us all jealous! Curious why you enclosed 1 bay. Is that to reduce heating costs in the winter? Also now may be a good time to upgrade your lights in the workshop bay to LED and keep the fluorescents as backups for the lighting in the other 2 bays.

Thanks guys.

Yeah single bay to keep the heating costs down, & have other plans for the other 2.
The single isn't exactly small though, its 13.5 x 28 + the alcove.

Sticking with fluorescent lighting, I have access to a bunch of them at the right price.

Looks awesome.. That heater looks like a monster.
Very cool mate, did you do the roughing in yourself? Looks very cool and man I'd love a workshop like that.

Thanks Vanne, the UH definitely does the job

Yes, this is a DIY project.
I dont have a gas ticket, so had someone make the gas connection for me.
I also had someone to help with the drywall mudding to speed things up a bit. (plus I hate that part).

Pretty cool! I was curious about walling off the one bay, but the heating cost makes sense. I look forward to the updates!

LOL

Sure, no problem as long as you bring someone from Lang with you.

Looking good! Are you planning to soundproof a small section where you can go scream and curse and nobody in the house will hear you?

You'll have your turn when you get to his age. You need to make some babies first so you have an excuse to buy a big house, which comes with a big garage. Of course these houses don't really exist in Alexandria or anywhere near the beltway for under $1 million so you'll have to move somewhere way the heck out like Purcellville.

BTW, my brother in law lives in Alexandria and has a Z4 too (E89).

Nice! My recent garage reno only amounted to putting up some wall tracks and cabinets for organization. My garage is a bit small. I'll live vicariously thru your pix.

lol @ mudding. I actually gringed at the pix w/ the drywall up because, although nice, I did not envy the next step in completing the walls.

Curious, though....if you didn't have a line on fluorescent lights, what would you have gone with? Cans?

Just build my dream house and I have the three car up and a single car entrance to the excavated three car below. I have to wait for the lot to the south of me to be developed before I can think of a rear driveway. I also need to figure out some sound deading as it is very echoy down there. Even without the off-road toys can get to the back garage. Still getting used to the space. It is nice to have a garage with nothing but cars inside. :-)

yeah, I've done enough mudding to appreciate someone to lend a hand.
especially with the ceiling.

for the lighting it would still have been strip lights to get the level of lighting I want and where I want it, around the perimeter of the car & over the work bench.
they make LED in 4' strip now.

POT lights are a PITA to install as well

Have you considered going a little crazy with those LED strips? Maybe something like a futuristic hallway?

Such as this:

I was thinking of the ones that wrapped all the way around each wall (you know, all the way around except for the floor) but they were only in circular constructions.

It would look cool on the car, to have different angles lit up like something out of SEMA and you'd get the added benefit of a creative lighting solution. The sci-fi side of me took over.

I'll make sure to drag Andrew from California up to Toronto one of these days, maybe we'll be rebuilding cranks together (no but really, hopefully not haha).
