I just picked up Kirkland's 7 Year Small Batch Bourbon. Going to give it a try tonight.

Is Costco not selling their brand of scotch anymore? Their scotch is very good but have not been seeing any for close to 2 years now.

We have it at our location. Are you talking about the single malt or the blended 12y? I haven't seen the single malt in a bit but we have the blended readily available.

Thumbs up

So that Dewars 15 was so impressive, I decided to grab another offering from them. Very unique in that they age this Scotch in Rum Casks. VERY tasty and smooth and a superb value. Highly recommend you look for this one...

If you like the rum finish there are several others worth trying. Angels Envy Rye and the Balvenie 14y Caribbean cask being two of my favorites.

Like Hawkeye said, The Balvenie does a Caribbean Cask as well. Very tasty.

Recently I've been drinking some Balcones Baby Blue on the rock (big ass ice 2.5"x2.5" ice cube molds). Before this bottle I finished some Arberlour 12.

For scotch drinkers, do you guys have a minimum of years for your bottle?

I used to purchase strictly 15 years and up, but lately been venture out to the 12-14 years range. Most are disappointing, but some are good for its price.

Will give Balvenie 14 yrs Caribbean Cask a try.

I actually avoid older ones and prefer younger as the flavors are more pronounced and less mellowed. My dad has a long time Scot friend who says they don't keep anything over 12yo, they just sell it to the Americans and Japanese.

I like the baby blue. I tend to do ryes for American whiskey, but the Balcones has enough bite to still get my attention.

I'd agree with this myself as well. There are some older ones that are great, but often you are just paying for the years. It is mostly a taste issue, but to me the older ones often taste more leathery and woody, especially beyond the 16yr mark. I also prefer non-chill-filtered varieties, especially cask strength; these seem to have the most flavor.

Yeah, I've just started dipping my toe into the whiskey/scotch arenas and am trying to find what I like. With scotch I like smokey and hot and I'm tending to lean that way in my whiskeys too... If I'm not mistaken, rye is often a decent middle ground between smokey/hot scotches and sweet/smooth bourbons, right?

Yeah, in a sense. Ryes tend to be less sweet and spicier. Hotter is more a matter of proof, and it's easy to find bourbons and ryes in stronger proofs than Scotches, but all are available in greater than 80 proof without too much hunting.

Bulleit is my favorite Rye - I'm told most rye's use a mash bill (base whiskey) that all comes from either Beam or another big KY source, and that is only about 30-50% rye mixed with corn. Bulleit is one of the few that do their own mash, and I think that it is 100% rye. I don't do as much w/ bourbon/rye so haven't experimented as much - did try the Ri brand and found it to be disappointing (but that was several years ago).

Bulleit Rye is advertised as 95% Rye, (not proof)

Give the Crown Winter Harvest Rye a try, my recent favorite. I've been thru 2 of those and still have a few oz of Bulleit left.

Basil Hayden Dark Rye is also quite palatable, although I have a few oz of that left in a bottle as well.

Around here, I don't think any of the above are more than $40.
