Weight Reduction Strategy

I did some searching but couldn't find a concise Z4M weight reduction strategy thread. Seeing that many of you have removed stock components and actually weighed them, would you be willing to post component weights (as accurate as you can get)?

I'll be posting in here as I weigh various components on my end (I have scales and even do my own corner balancing for the ultimate weight comparisons). Here are some components which seem to be common for removal:

- Rear battery (?lb)
- Passenger Seat (Leather/Heated/Power) = 60 lb
- Driver Seat (Leather/Heated/Power) = 56 lb
- Passenger Door Card (incl. speaker) = 7.6lb
- Intake Air Plenum = 9.2 lb
- Stock Air Filter Box = 4.6 lb
- Exhaust Headers US (shorter) = 8.8 lb
- Exhaust Headers US (longer) = 9.6 lb
- Exhaust Headers EURO (shorter) = 4.6 lb
- Exhaust Headers EURO (longer) = 5.6 lb
- Exhaust Section 1 (US) = 19 lbs
- Exhaust Section 2 (US)
- Exhaust rear muffler = 22 lb ea.
- Rear wheel with tire and logo: 53.8 pound
- Rear Wheel: 9.0J x 18 EH2 IS30 25.88 lb
- Front wheel with tire and logo: 49.4 pound
- Front Wheel: 8.0J x 18 EH2 IS42 24.75 lb
- Front Shock complete assembly = 17 lbs
- Rear Shock and Spring
- Front Sway Bar and Endlink
- Rear Sway Bar and Endlink
- Front Caliper = 12.2 lb
- Front Rotor = 18.4 lb
- Rear Caliper = 7.4 lb
- Rear Rotor = 14.6 lb
- Rear Tools (Air compressor, canister, tow hook) = 5 lb
- Rear hatch cover mechanism = 7.5 lb
- Flywheel
- Aluminum Roof = 38 lb
- Rear Hatch (w/o glass) = 31.6 lb
- Rear Hatch Glass = 15.8 lb
- Door (Shell, Empty) = 30 lb, Everything but door card = 51.6 lb
- Rear Fender = 7 lb
- Front Fender = 9.9 lb
- Hood

NAV and Audio:
04.8 lbs-Harness
01.0 lbs-misc brackets
04.2 lbs-2 Kick panel Speakers
14.2 lbs-2 Rear subwoofers
00.2 lbs-GPS antenna
09.0 lbs-Amps/amp brackets
03.4 lbs-4 mid range speakers
00.2 lbs-2 tweeters
03.6 lbs-GPS/DVD drive
02.4 lbs-Pop-up display
02.6 lbs-Head unit

(If I missed a thread which already covers the above, please link me!)

Here is wheels and tires together, here is some more info on the wheels.

Empty door shells and quarter panel are here. Might be some more weights in that thread but i'm too sleepy to read through it again, great thread definitely worth a read on its own.

Subscribed to this thread!

I wanted to make a similar thread months ago when I gutted my interior but was too lazy/didn't took the time to weight everything...

Weight reduction is the nicest mods one can do to his car. And it's the cheapest!

The better place to remove weight is in the extremity. I will remove bumper covers soon on my car and I will try to put the bumper beam on the scale. Those would be nice parts to have in CF/Kevlar like E46 M3...

I think this thread should be a sticky but in the track section because it's the only place where weight reduction matters: on the track!

It would be fun also if people put what the remove/modify and the actual weight of their car on scale.

I will have a corner weight done on my car in March/April and I really hope I am near/under the 3000lbs.

If you guys are interested in shaving some extra weight, I'm working on a group buy for carbon fiber front fenders. They're about 1.8 lbs each, I have a thread on the for sale section if you guys want to see pictures.

Amen to that! I almost ran a buddy off the track during global time attack at button willow due to mirrors like that. May as well just leave them off

There is no solution

There is a ball in the base plate, it's the pivot to adjust the angle of the mirror. It hold in place with 1 set screw. This often come loose.

The vibration comes mainly from the rod design I think.

What if I modify the base to make it nonadjustable and solid? Does your mirror vibrate badly since day one?
