Navtool Carplay (06 3.0si)

I know that not everyone cares for carplay, however I do, and I have grown accustomed to having it in all the vehicles I drive. Since I recently picked up my 06 Z4 and it had NAV, I preferred to leverage as much of the built in system as possible without having to put in an aftermarket radio and all that. I saw several options (the android screen would be my next choice if this doesn't pan out over time).

I will be revising this as I go as more of a DIY since, NAVTool does not appear to have any valid documentation on how this actually get's installed, and has never responded using their chat feature or email. I was lucky that whoever answers their text line, gave me enough information to at least make some sense of it.

Here is what I purchased from NavTool:
https://www.navtool.com/bmw-z4-2003-...e-carplay.aspx

I will add that I have a GromBT3, with the charge cable and 3.5mm adapter and I do use an rca to 3.5mm jack to allow the audio from the carplay to come through to the factory head unit. You could leverage the built in aux cable if you have it, I preferred to keep things as clean as I could, when I am finished, there will be a single connection for my iphone for carplay.

I have got it working, even without any real form of instructions on how this works at all. Still waiting for the rear/front cameras to arrive, and I'll be writing up once I get everything in over the next week or so. At least in testing before putting away everything and finding suitable power and ground (I used a 12v power supply just to get it going) to make sure it actually worked.

I have ordered the momentary switch, front and rear cameras, and positaps for power to make things easier on myself. I have also ordered a panel mountable USB extension so I can just plug in the iphone cable and be on my way. I also found you would need about a 1.5' 3.5mm extension cable for infrared eye for the remote they provide. If you are going to leverage your aux connector, you'll need a stereo male RCA to 3.5mm male that you'll need to route from the carplay harness to the aux in. I also ordered RCA male to male coupler, to connect the video output of the carplay box to the video 3 input of the BMW18 (the add on video interface)

Outside of this, zip ties, electrical tape, google, and cable sheers would be handy. It would also be handy if NAVtool supplied current instructions, the ones the provide...well they are not current at all.

Definitely following. Carplay in my roadster would be a game changer.

It works really well, honestly. I've just got to have time to write it up.

I'm listening (well reading, but you know what I mean). I would love carplay in this car.

How hard is it to install? I would like to order a set and have someone install for me.
I'm debating between this and the bluebus.

I have bought the same CarPlay units for my e86 Coupe and am now working out how to install it. Can you give me any help here?

In particular, can I access the DVD from the back?

Any photos of the procedure would be greatly appreciated

Yes, I apologize, I have been slammed at work for months.

The easiest way to be honest, is to remove as many panels as possible. If you don't have a trim tool and torx bits, go down to the auto parts store and buy them.

Videos or how to’s that make removing panels easier:
Removing Center Console:
https://www.pelicanparts.com/techart...eplacement.htm
Remove Center Trim:
2 caps, Phillips screws at bottom
2 threaded expanding rivits under opening
Now put the top up
Remove top trim piece to reveal
2 T30 Torx under top trim
Under the door:
2 T15 torx bits under impossible to remove trim piece under the door.
Unclip top white wire connector.
Pull lower trim out to sides (near where you removed the cap/screws)
Lift straight up on trim. Try not to cry as old hard plastic trim panel clips break.
Disconnect any other wiring connectors (SOS/Phone/etc)
Put top back down.
Slide out lower cubby.
Get 4 small Phillips screwdrivers (about the size of the largest eye glass repair screwdrivers). Push into the 4 holes on the navi DVD player. Alternatively they make “c” shaped adapters for removing older car stereos. All you are trying to do is to push the retaining tabs in so you can pull the player out.
Reach under the DVD drive and slide it forward till it comes out. May require a little effort.
Push down on blue connector to release it.

James:

How do you control it? Is there a knob / buttons that you've mounted somewhere?

There is an IR remote that attaches to the steering wheel to control the carplay; there is another switch you install (a momentary toggle) to tell the system to switch between normal operation and to swap between screens to display. I also have it tied in so when I go into reverse, it automatically switches to the reverse camera.

Is that how the screen looks? I would be really irked if that screen is crooked towards the left like that. Also is the sound quality good as well?
