Apple TV (gen 4)

So I got the new Apple TV and connected it to my Denon receiver via HDMI and got everything working. Video is ok but audio sounds terrible. Nowhere in the neighborhood of TV sound quality from DirecTV DVR or OTA antenna going through same receiver. Music sounds much worse than iPhone via AirPlay or USB connected to same receiver. Anyone else have this issue (or a solution)? Considering a return if I can't figure out how to improve sound.

Maybe it needs to be synced with iTunes? Or needs an expensive adapter of some sort?

Ironically, I'm on it right now! Was watching the NHL app (Rangers played like shit tonight) and actually went to my music and was playing "Have a Cigar". I think it sounds pretty good. I have a new Denon receiver with 7.1 speakers. Mine is connected to the Media Player input via HDMI on the receiver.

Same exact setup I have except I have 5.1. Was watching Netflix and it sounded terrible compared to DVR. Music sounded worse. Receiver is Denon 5200. Everything else going through receiver sounds great. Guess I'll try some other programming to see it if was what I was watching.

That's really strange. Maybe try and bring it to a friend's house and connect it to their stereo. You could have a bad ATV. Good luck.

I think the problem is Netflix.

I've been rather disappointed with the new ATV; the remote is annoying, more often than not I'll rewind the show by merely picking it up. The app atmosphere is kinda cool, but Netflix isn't working as it should, no stopping of playback after the third episode. Also, what's with cutting the optical output jack?!

Try changing the audio mode to 16bit instead of Auto.

This is the first ATV we've had. It's ok. I'm not overly impressed either. I considered returning but will probably keep it. I probably should have just gotten a Roku 3...

I do like getting YouTube and ESPN 3 on TV. Disappointed in 720p and sound quality from Netflix but guess I need to fiddle with it and / or my A/V receiver. Neither video not sound from ATV are up to par with DirecTV DVR or OTA antenna. I also haven't had success using AirPlay to send from iPad to ATV - my iPad froze and restarted but I only tried it once.

I got my Harmony remote to control ATV - much easier than the remote that comes with the ATV. Of course, I'm a little disappointed in the Harmony remote too but for other reasons (multi-room control)...

I have the original Apple TV and two of the previous models. Works great, but don't see a reason to buy the new one. Word is they are working on a 5th one...

Do you have a 4k TV? I had to upgrade my Netflix account to stream at 4k. I've been told it makes the audio better as well. Not sure if it's true though.

No, actually my TV is a fairly old plasma but ATV only seems to output 720p and won't let me switch to 1080p when connected through receiver. Could be setting on my A/V receiver (Denon 5200), which is also new and fairly complex (at least to me). Sound is better with ATV 16-bit setting but still not the same at DVR or antenna. I need to spend some time messing around with settings on ATV and receiver, I think.
