Do a roll-up style garage door.

SWMBO would never go for that. Neither would I to be honest. The doors need to be more attractive than rollups.

I had to replace a panel in my garage door years ago and was able to source one. Unless I'm missing something, can't you buy an additional panel for the garage door you choose and "make it so". You'll have to change out some hardware and figure out the rails but it seems doable. Found this thread with some similar discussion.

How can I simultaneously have the door open so I can pull a car in/out, AND have a car up in the air?

That's a roll-up garage door. Just because they're roll-ups doesn't mean they have to be ugly.

IMO the only way to accommodate a 2 or 4 post lift in a residential is to either go roll-up or lift up bi-fold like this:

Your average sectional is going to require tracks and take way 2-4' of clearance. I mean, you CAN have the lift in the garage, just you can't use the lift when the garage door is open or lift your car up to full height.

I can't use a rollup because, even as attractive as that one is in the post above, it's not what you-know-who wants. To be honest it would not be my preferred look either; I want some glass in the doors.

Back from the dead. We've been through a bunch of stuff such as variance hearings and almost being blindsided by our state's move to a new building code, but the project is officially underway! Woo hoo!

Trees have been cut down and we're in the process of converting the trunks into firewood. Excavator comes in a couple of weeks and then things really start in earnest. I'll update the thread with our progress.

Congrats!

What the decision on the lift? - My vote is still 2-post

My buddy Phil had this type of door in his garage he built for a shop. He had a 4-post lift. Worked perfectly.

I'll probably do a 4-post because I want it primarily for storage. I've seen 4-post lifts with jacks and other accessories that turn them into pretty handy maintenance helpers, so I think I'll compromise in that direction.

I'll have room for a lift because of 10 ft. ceilings everywhere, plus one bay with a cathedral ceiling. The door rails will follow the ceiling line and I'm putting side mount door openers on at least that one door, so I'll have pretty much clearance. I may not be able to put a pickup truck up there with something under it, but I'll be able to get it off the floor for maintenance if needed. And lower stuff like Z4M Coupes should clear with room to spare.

Update on the garage: there was a small bit of excavation required. At one point I thought they were going to bring out the TNT...

Congratulations! Glad to see the project has started.

Your "old" Coupe has had it's own garage space since the road trip back from PA. Looking forward to reading updates on your progress. Cheers

Thanks for checking in! Such a pretty car. I do miss it, but the E93 is not too shabby as its replacement. Not as much sporting character, more of a cruiser than the coupe was, but then I have the Moupe for times when I want to romp. The E93 fits well in the lineup.

More like mud! Footer went in yesterday, block gets laid today. Speaking of which, I have to go move my car.

Come on man, let's see some pics! It's under-roof by now?

Not yet! The footer is done, foundation is done, and the utilities just got trenched out from the house. Framing starts, well, I don't know; the contractor hasn't told me. But probably next week.

I've been busting my butt on a couple of other projects but I'll post up some pics shortly.

Not much happening recently due to the endless rain in these parts. Here's the latest. Hopefully the roof trusses go up tomorrow.
