Engine ticking

I recently got a 07 3.0i. When the weather was warmer, the engine would have a ticking sound if I left it in the garage for a few days. The ticking goes away after 8-10 minutes of driving. I did an oil change to 0-40 mobile euro syn blend and I started to notice it more. Now, even if I drove it the day before, in the cold, there is ticking in the morning for about 5 minutes or so and then it goes away. Is there a better oil to use for winter? Is there any engine work that needs to be done or could be done to help?

Not that it should matter a lot but I believe the oil should be 0w-30w not 40.

Mobil 1 0w40 European formula is on the bmw approved oil list for our cars. There are some over thought oil threads somewhere buried, I know it’s been over discussed on the 1er boards I’ve read as well.

Your engine is specified for LL-01 A3/B4 3.5 HTHS or greater oils, so yes M1 0W-40 is a good choice. Grade is irrelevant, they are all very similar. There are not really too many thinner LL-01 oils. I would try PP Euro 5W-40 or Castrol Edge 0W-30 A3/B4 to see if they quiet it down any more than the Mobil, but the M1 is very good oil and what I would use personally.

How many miles? Service history (intervals)?

It's most likely the hydraulic lifters for the cam shafts that ticks a bit before the oil gets warm/thin enough to generate enough pressure in the lifters.

Yes, how would the camshafts open the valves otherwise? They aren't pneumatically controlled.

Number 7 in this URL are the hydraulic valve lifters.

He is suggesting they could be making the noise, not asking if there are some. And there are engines without them.

N52 had history with noisy lifters. You can run a heavier weight oil, 0w40 is more 30 than 40.

Okey, thought it was directed to me as I was the only one mentioning them. It's not many cars that have solid lifters these days, the S54 was the last BMW engine to have it.
