A Little Update On My New M Coupe!!!
IT'S AMAZING!!!!!
And again, styling, the best thing about the car (+power, +interior, +etc.) Yeah, it is, but seriously. When I woke up this morning, I had to run some chores for my parents, so I was pumped about driving the car. However, after about an hour or so, I became kind of disappointed. The harsh manual and the clutch, combined with huge traffic, lots of road works and the stupid weather we had today in Chi (it was like 88 with 90% of humidity-unbearable), I felt very upset with the Coupe. And additionally, tonight, I found about that after doing about 40 miles, I burned off 1/4 of the tank!!! (but that's probably because of the 1st day with the manual) But then, after becoming accustomed with the gear box, cleaning the interior meticulously, I found the true beauty and purpose of the car. It is stunning, both on the inside and out. The attention to details is amazing. And the POWER. OH, MY GOD!!! I haven't had a chance to even go over 60mph, but it is sooooo fast!!! All I've got to say is, thank God, I got this car. It's amazing!!!

I am glad you like it. It is a great little car.
For the clutch issue can be made quite a bit better by either removing ot getting a modified CDV (Clutch Delay Valve.) |

What does the CDV do? Makes for sloppy delayed shifts and increased clutch wear (Thanks BMW), supposed to take stress off the drivetrain where drivers are new to a clutch or driving the way they shouldn't be.
CDV is short for clutch delay valve, it restricts flow of fluid to the clutch to make it engage slower than driver input. http://www.zeckhausen.com/CDV.htm Removing the CDV is the first thing I did for both BMWs, much improved- even my wife could tell a difference.

I don't know if your BMW dealer would approve since it removes something BMW thought necessary for your car, but is fairly easy to do- most shops would charge you for an hour maybe?

Any modifications you do could be reason for denying warranty coverage- if that is a concern you could wait until the warranty period is up.

the aftermarket CDV looks almost identical to the BMW one. so in the event that your tranny break down (unlikely) i highly doubt a BMW mechanic would notice the fact that there is a different CDV down there.
IMO the zeck CDV makes a difference but just not as great as i expected. there is still a delay just not as bad as the OEM one. but it deffinatly makes me less tired in daily driving/spirited. |

I'm just curious, but what exactly is your issue with the clutch? I got the impression from your post that you were having an issue with the effort in stop and go traffic. I don't think the CDV delete is going to alleviate that, if that was in fact the issue. Just something to consider before you go through the effort. In any case, congrats on the new car

It's very annoying because sometimes I can't leave the lights as fast as I would want to. and I look like an idiot changing from 1st to 2nd. I'm not saying, I'm the best driver, but I thought that after 3 days of driving, I would already have it figured out If you have any suggestions to me, then go ahead.

No, that sounds to me exactly like whats described in the link above about the CDV delete. http://www.zeckhausen.com/CDV.htm Especially the jerky 1-2 shift. I had the impression from your post that you were talking more about the clutch effort, so that was my misunderstanding. I've only had limited drives in the cars I've test driven so I guess I haven't gotten a good feel for it yet. I'm sure it will become more apparent once I'm living with the car on a daily basis.

I just hope you find a sick M in your area. I can only say, sorry that I took that black coupe off the market.

No worries Glad the car worked out for you and you're enjoying it.
My last two cars were black and as much as I love it (its really the ultimate color for a sports car) I'm debating whether I want all that work again. Silver or white are so much less work, just nowhere near as mean looking. |

From what I've gathered, the 1-2 and 2-3 shift isn't a CDV issue, but at Gearbox issue. The clutch engagement time is slowed by the valve, the refusing to shift is a problem with the gearbox. In my case, it didn't do it enough to really bother me, but eventually it did go away.

It's possible that it's the synchros. I don't know that the issue has ever been officially addressed or resolved. I do know that the last time my gears refused to shift was between 9k and 10k miles.
From what I've seen changing out the CDV doesn't cure the shifting issue.
