Dead ECU, any INPA Users Here?

I did headers a while back and had a tune from AA that turned down the o2 sensors for inspection purposes. Everything was fine but I would get a weird surging idle. AA offered to revise the tune and I figured may as well purchase their new flash loader for quicker uploads. Big mistake.

After following all procedures and uploading the tune, my car won't start. Turn the key and the engine cranks but it won't turn. I the unplugged the AA flash loader and hooked up my OBD diag device and even that can't connect to my ECU... wtf?!

I then tried to recover my ECU using my backup tune but still same result. And I also noticed this time the AA flash loader showed "vehicle manufacturer ECU hardware number shows ????"

For those familiar with INPA, can I recover my ECU? I've never used it before but at this point I'll try anything. Did some research online and seems like INPA may be able to recover if I realign the DDE and EWS.

INPA doesnt flash ecu's
BMW uses other programs for that. They have 2 but I'm not sure about the difference.
The bmw flash tools are not exactly user friendly.

INPA is diagnostic with some adjustment on components.
But if you can read your cpu with inpa, your ecu can probably be saved.

I have no idea if the bmw flash tools will be able to handle your backup file. (I doubt it)

Flash or not, my question was really asking if INPA can be used to fix my car using those few adjustment capabilities? I've read others with similar symptoms stating it was an immobilizer issue and "realigning the DDE ans EWS" using INPA allowed the ecu to start communicating again.

Mini update but I'm convinced my ECU is bricked. Not sure how it happened as my voltage was good and the laptop never froze. *Sigh*

I'd try to get a hold of AA. I bet they will be able to give you some advice. I doubt your DME is toast. Worst case though, you might have to send your DME to them to reflash it.

You can use WinKFP to try to reflash your DME.

I sent in my ECU, EWS (what a pain to remove) and key to AA. They're going to recover and reload the map and send back. Just no idea how long it'll take because they need to get a Z4 3.0 in their shop to test before shipping back to me.

It was but what can you do? Anyways if anyone ever has a fried or bricked ecu, I highly recommend shipping it to RPM Motorsports. They were able to able to recover my ecu back to stock, really professional crew over there.

Glad to hear it was fixed.

Will you go for a tune or will you keep it stock now once you got it fixed?

They "owe" me a tune so I may ask for a map that's same as factory but with o2's turned down so I can pass emissions. I'm hesitant for a performance tune since I no longer have the weird idle. That's the thing with off the shelf tunes, n52 on z4 isn't same as e90. I'd imagine its same as the s54 tune for the m3 won't work as intended on the z4. Maybe down the road I'll get a custom dyno tune from Frank Smith.

Probably a wise move. I know the S54's in the Z4 have a newer version of the Siemens ECU than the E46's and the same goes for the Bosch ABS unit. Kinda wierd they use different ECU's for the same kind of engine.

I did some research looking into the E90 with the N52 and the E87, they have the same version of ECU as the Z4's. But the N52 was used in many different cars so the ECU might vary.

Ecu hardware are same for n52 but map settings must differ considering the weird idle I had only begun after the tune. Either way just happy I got my car back although I missed the last month of track season.

I am about to contact RPM Motorsports to rebuild my e36 M3 DME. I hear they are the best because I have another company to check my DME and they screw it up. Now I have 2 VINs and it is an automatic.

Hello all. I just used BimmerLabs files and WinKFP to flash my 2007 Z4 N52 software from a
3.0i to a 3.0Si and now the car cranks but wont start.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

It could be several things, but a checksum error is most likely. Flash a stock tune with WinKFP and see if it solves your issue.

How would I check for that issue? Here is what I saw.

Doesn't the 215hp 3.0i n52 has different maps than the 3.0si 260hp n52... amongst other parameters?

You can get custom tunes for catless headers, high octane gas,
and bypassing O2 sensors.

Did you try writing a stock tune?
