We didn't have much and the coolest car my parents had was my mother's Hyundai Tiburon, the second generation.
At the same time, it was my uncle's 911 sc that sparked my obsession. The feel, the sound, the SMELL!! I couldn't get enough. And at the time, I was no more than 5-6. Moving on, it was one of my "rich" friend's (obvi his parents were the ones with the money) who's parent's always had the "cool" cars. When they went out of town, we would take out their MB CL55amg, 1st gen X54.8, and some other super luxurious whips. We felt like such ballers in our late teens picking up cuties in South Beach and taking them to the beach penthouse. Good times.

None of the cars they had were halfway interesting. Both had horrible British Leyland products for awhile. Mom had a Austin Marina 4 door 4 spd and the other had a Austin Marina GT that was equally as bad.

Father would take us to motor racing from an early age. He was the marketing manager for local port and did quite a bit to help get a local waterfront race running for many years in 1980s.
From that many of the street based race cars ( group A ) left an impression. BMWs caught my attention with first the e24 635i cars and then the iconic e30 m3s. He did look to get a e21 323i but unfortunately became ill and passed shortly after Needless to say ,a couple of years later I brought an e21 323 at the age of 21. Got a bit of grief at the time from a few stuck up BMW owners. They used to be expensive cars down under in the 1980s. I was considered too young to own one. But for me the car was a homage to my father. 35 years later , still running around in BMWs. I think my father would have enjoyed the various models I’ve had since. |

My dad had a beautiful 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix SJ 455 in forest green. Even at 6-7 I loved that car.
He also had a 1978 Trans Am (2nd year smokey and the bandit model) but honestly, was a malaise POS. At the same time mom had an bright yellow AMC Pacer. My friends called it Global One. But the GP hooked me bad. Hated Chevys ever since. I can remember being on school bus field trips in the early 70s and we would call out year make and model as we saw em, sometimes just from the headlights in the dark. |
